T
he cellular telephone is the
most well-known of the
current array of in-car de-
vices. The prices for these
phones are within the financial
grasp of a growing number of con-
sumers, and not just busy pro-
fessionals. This is due in part to
selected auto manufacturers that
offer cellular phones as no-cost
extras, as Lexus has done with
their GS300 model.
Media and advertising hype is
also forwarding other nonwork-
related reasons for an in-car cel-
lular phone. These include
convenience and security.
And how's this for the ultimate
hands-free unit? Honda Corp. is
now offering customers a new op-
tion: a dealer-installed, in-dash
cellular phone on the Accord
wagon, sedan, Prelude and Acu-
ra Integra models.
According to Michael Day, as-
sistant manager automobile ac-
cessories marketing for Honda,
requests for the in-dash phones
are growing rapidly.
The unit features a large easy-
to-read display and a built-in
microphone providing excellent
speaker phone performance
that enables the driver to
keep both hands on the steering
wheel. When a call is received,
the phone automatically mutes
the sound system. The incoming
caller's voice is played through
the stereo unit, so voice clarity is
excellent.
With additional features
such as superspeed dialing,
which allows drivers to access
their nine most frequently called
numbers by the push of a button,
and last number recall to name
a few, this in-dash cellular unit
looks like the hot car item for the
'90s.
ELECTRONIC MAPS
The future of paper maps be-
comes less secure as more and
more devices are developed that
can electronically store an entire
country, sector or region's streets
and tell you how to get there.
One such device, NavMate,
made by Zexel USA Corp., can
plot a route to such locations as
the nearest bank ATM and will
vocally guide you to your desti-
nation.
The unit utilizes global posi-
tioning satellites in conjunction
with a trunk-mounted antenna
and trunk-mounted computer
tied in with the odometer and a
gyroscope. The display, at only 4
square inches is still large enough
for you to easily read street
names on the screen. If you miss
a turn, you can, with a punch of
a button, create a new display
that shows you an alternate mute
to your destination. The system
is so good that it knows your lo-
cation at all times, within a frac-
tion of a mile. NavMate will be
available as an option on Oldsmo-
biles by 1996.
SMART AUDIO SYSTEMS
Just when you thought the car
stereo system might have been
forgotten in all the development
and hype about electronic navi-
gational systems and cellular
phones, along comes new ad-
vances in the form of mini CDs
and even new stereos that can
scan for a particular type of mu-
sic.
Using a new technology called
the Radio Broadcast Data Sys-
tem, stations can broadcast pro-
gram information and call letters.
Sony and other manufacturers
will offer this type of unit for the
home and car. 111
