DEBBIE SKLAR SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

uring the work week,
personal injury attor-
ney Ray Horenstein
is busy defending peo-
ple in auto accident cases, but on
the weekend he's busy revving
engines.
Mr. Horenstein, 52, of Farm-
ington Hills, has been racing
Corvettes for 26 years. He said
his passion with this sportscar
began early on in his life.
As a teen-ager serving corned
beef sandwiches in his dad's
business, Hy Horenstein's Deli,
his thoughts often turned to au-
tomobiles.
"Tell me what guy didn't
dream of owning a Corvette
then? For 30 years it was the
only all-American sports car
there was. It was a real status
symbol to own one; I think it still
is today," he said.
"There really is no magic to
my interest in cars," he added.
"I had a black-on-black 1966
Corvette convertible that I
bought for $3,000 in 1967. It was
a great car that I wish I still had.
Ever since then, I've really loved
them."
Mr. Horenstein becomes nos-
talgic when he describes this car
which had a black exterior, black
leather interior and a 427/390
engine with a side-pipe exhaust
system. "In mint condition to-
day, it would be worth $50,000
minimum."

But his passion for cars was auto mechanic for the family
replaced for true love. "I met my cars.
"I do spend a lot of time out
wife in 1967 and we got en-
gaged," he said. "I was a senior here," he said, looking around
in law school and something had the finished garage. "I like to
work on them and take them
to go."
But he wasn't without a apart. It's really a low-mainte-
