the car. In a race where efficien-
cy is the rule, this was as good as
running the race with one flat
tire.
When race day finally came,
we did our best. Even with all
that our car had been through,
we finished in a respectable 9th
place, ahead of Nissan and Michi-
gan. Now ranked as the top team
. in North America in our class, we
are preparing for Sunrayce '95.
Coming up in the last week of
June, Sunrayce '95 stretches
from Indianapolis, Indiana, to
Golden, Colorado. In order to
compete, each team must submit
a proposal for its car. The De-
partment of Energy look over
these and selects 30 teams (GW
is one of these) who must pass a
minimum qualifying time short-
ly before race day. Ten more
spots are open for the top non-
seeded qualifying times.
With our latest car well under
way, everyone on the team is ex-
cited for a chance to walk away
with first place. We've learned a
great deal from our past experi-
ences and have innovative solu-
tions to some very high-tech
questions.
Perhaps the best part of it all
is the support from the universi-
ty. Curricula at George Wash-
ington University are being
integrated into the project.
Those involved in the market-
ing and fund-raising aspects are
able to earn credit toward their
business degrees, while those
who help design the car are earn-
ing credit toward their engineer-
ing degrees. This program, and
others like it, encourage students
to do some research and learning
on their own, out of genuine in-
terest for the subject. At the
same time, the project offers the
"real world" experience so many
employers love to see in a uni-
versity graduate. LI
