BEATRICE B. STEFFIN, 73,
of Southfield, died Dec. 30. She
was the beloved wife of the late
Samuel Stein and the late Peter
Steffin. She is survived by her son
and daughter-in-law, Donald and
Barbara Stein of Southfield;
daughter and son-in-law, Eileen
and Eric Hemmi of Farmington
Hills; brother and sister-in-law,
Joseph and Dorothy Bluestein of
Oak Park; sister and brother-in-
law, Esther and Max Rubin of
Oak Park; grandchildren, Sher-
ri (Dr. Steve) Wolf, Denise (Paige)
Wedgle, Todd Hemmi and Kim
(Steve) Schwartz; great-grand-

SAUL J. TOWER, 49, of Mon-
treal, formerly of Detroit, died
Dec. 25. He is survived by chil-
dren, Stacey R. and Ashley E.;
he was the brother of the late
Barry M. Tower. Interment in

69, of Boyton Beach, Fla. and
West Bloomfield, died Dec. 31. He
is survived by his wife Barbara;

LILLIAN ZIMBING, 84, of Ann
Arbor, died Dec. 27. Mrs. Zimring
was a grocery store executive in
Phladelphia and was active in
Hadassah and the Albert Ein-
stein Hospital Auxiliary in.
Philadelphia. She was the
beloved wife of the late Herman
Zimring and the loving sister of
the late Harry Edelstein and the
late Bernard Edelstein. Mrs. Zim-
ring is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Ruth and John
Campbell of Ann Arbor, Arlene
Zinring Klonsky and Edward
Klonsky of New York City; grand-
children, David and Shawn
Campbell, Robert and Judy
Campbell; great-grandchildren,
Nathan and Emory Campbell;
sister, Mildred Messinger of Wyn-
cott, Pa.; sisters-in-law, Ethel
Goldenburg, Thelma Edelstein.

SAUL Z1UIEBACK, 89, of Farm-
ington Hills, died Jan. 2. Mr.
Zuieback was an executive and
the owner and founder of
Zuiback's Women's Apparel. He
was the beloved husband of the
late Blanche Zuiback. He is sur-
vived by his son and daughter-in-
law, Ivan and Judith of Bloom-
field Hills; daughter, Tobi Caplan
of Southfield; grandchildren, Lau-
ra and Clifford Deremo, Arthur
and Frances Caplan, Michael and
Sheila Zuieback, Erica Zuieback;
great-grandchildren, Hannah
and Michael Deremo; sister, Ruth
Kepes of Farmington Hills. In-
terment at Clover Hill Park

Solomon Gaon
Dead At 82

Gaon, the chief rabbi of congre-
gations affiliated with the World
Sephardi Federation, interna-
tional spokesman for Sephardic
Jews and world-renowned schol-
ar on Sephardic Jewish history,
died here Dec. 21 at the age of 82.
Rabbi Gaon was born in
Travnik, Yugoslavia, now part of
Bosnia, on Dec. 15, 1912, and be-
gan his studies at the Yeshiva of
Sarajevo.
After moving to England in
1934, he earned bachelor's and
doctoral degrees from the Uni-
versity of London, and a minis-
ter's degree and rabbinic
ordination from Jews' College in
London.
He was a minister, and even-
tually senior minister, at Lon-
don's Spanish and Portuguese
Synagogue from 1944 to 1949.
That year he was named Ha-
ham โ chief rabbi โ of the
British Commonwealth's Span-
ish and Portuguese Congrega-
tions. He held the position until
1982.
He also founded Judith, Lady
Montefiore College in London,
which was a training college for
Sephardic rabbis.
In 1962 he began a long affili-
ation with Yeshiva University in
New York, establishing there a
host of academic programs and
community activities related to
the Sephardim.
Since 1976, he was universi-
ty professor of Sephardic studies
at Yeshiva.
