We at CRUZ HEARING AID
SERVICE believe that children
should be assessed early in life.
This may prevent further problems
and complications. We provide ex-
pert hearing services for both
youngsters and adults. We have
an excellent reputation with our
clients, audiologists, physicians,
hospitals, and clinics. We don't
just fit hearing aids, we provide a
service! If you suspect your child
has a hearing problem, or if you
just want an assessment done,
please call us at 424-8450, or
come see us at 18899 W. 12 Mile
Rd., in Lathrup Village. We also
make house calls, and credit cards
are accepted.
P.S. An infant's hearing ability
should be assessed regardless of
his or her parents' smoking status.

A recent long-term study by re-
searchers in Ottawa indicates that
pregnant women who smoke raise
the risk of hearing impairment in
their unborn children. Previous
studies had shown that infants
born to women who smoked dur-
ing pregnancy did not exhibit as
vigorous a "startle response" as
infants born to non-smokers. Fol-
low-up auditory testing of these
same children, ranging in age from
6 to 11 years, showed that the
greater their exposure to smoke,
the poorer their performance. Re-
searchers speculate that a chem-
ical in cigarette smoke hampers
the development of outer hair cells
in the cochlea. Whatever the
cause, the effect is fairly clear. Pas-
sive smoke hurts the hearing abil-
ity of innocent infants and children.
