Previous studies had shown that infants born to women who smoked dur- ing pregnancy did not exhibit as vigorous a "startle response" as infants born to non-smokers. Fol- low-up auditory testing of these same children, ranging in age from 6 to 11 years, showed that the greater their exposure to smoke, the poorer their performance. Re- searchers speculate that a chem- ical in cigarette smoke hampers the development of outer hair cells in the cochlea. Whatever the cause, the effect is fairly clear.
