Rabbi Kasriel and Itty Shemtov,
who recently relocated to the
Maple/Drake/Halstead area,
have come to Michigan to estab-
lished "the Shur in West Bloom-
field. They have launched a new
program of outreach activities for
all Jews in the West Bloomfield
area.
Although "the Shul" — to be
built as the synagogue outreach
center of the Campus of Living
Judaism — has not yet begun
construction, Lubavitch of Michi-
gan brought the Shemtovs here
in order to accelerate the process
of reaching out to unaffiliated
Jews.
Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov, a na-
tive of Detroit, completed his rab-
binical studies in New York and
received ordination from the
Central Tomchei T'mimim
Lubavitch Rabbinical College.
He was later sent to Melbourne,
Australia, with a group of rab-
binic student emissaries to held
revitalize the Jewish communi-
ty there. Rabbi Shemtov led
adult Jewish education programs
and directed youth activities, as
well as Torah outreach programs
to the business community. He
traveled as a special emissary to
Taiwan, Korea and New
Zealand, to maintain contact
with and offer support, assis-
tance with JewiLs.h needs, and en-
couragement to isolated Jewish
communities. Rabbi Shemtov
also worked in the Office of
Shluchim in New York, the cen-
tral resource center for Lubav-
itch emissaries. he was
responsible for planning and de-
veloping projects, such as the
Matzoh Bakery, that have been
adopted by Jewish communities
world-wide.
Mrs. Itty Shemtov, a native of
Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated the
higher learning program and
teacher's seminary of Beth
Rivkah Associated Schools in
Brooklyn, where she also led the
extra-curricular activities de-
partment. In that position, she
helped organize a national con-
vention for girls' schools. She also

attended a teaching program in
Israel, sponsored by the Israeli
government.She has spent her
summers as head counselor in
camps in Kalkaska, Michigan,
North Carolina, Long Island,
New York, and even France.
Mrs. Shemtov also taught at
Beth Rivkah Seminary and at
a Talmud Torah in Queens, N.Y.
The Shemtovs are working in
tandem to offer a variety of edu-
cation, cultural, and holiday ac-
tivities to benefit the entire
community. Their goal is to be ac-
cessible to Jews who need a help-
ing hand, or just a friend. Torah
classes have already begun in
their home on Templar Crossing,
lunch and learn meetings.
An innovative program to dis-
seminate Jewish information will
soon be available. Torah FAX a
new, weekly, publication will
come to homes or offices via fax
and allows, the receipt of age-old
wit and wisdom of Torah through
state-of-the-art technology.
To subscribe to Torah FAX or
sign up for a class or for infor-
mation call Chabad, 737-7000.

at the New Bethel Shelter in
Pontiac, making quilts for AIDS
patients, packaging and deliver-
ing food for Yad Ezra, and help-
ing new Americans prepare

"Who is Wise? Tnsights from
Pirkei Avot," a text study semi-
nar led by Midrasha scholar-in-
residence Rabbi Rod Glogower,
will continue through mid-Janu-
ary, and new students are wel-
come to join the class. Tuition will
be prorated for students who en-
ter at this time. All students
should own a copy of Pirkei Avot
in Hebrew and English (may be
bought through Midrasha). Some
reading knowledge of Hebrew is
helpful but not required.
The seminar will meet on
Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to
