On Depression
The American Jewish Committee,
Detroit Chapter will recognize one
of its strongest supporters and lead-
ers, Mary Shapero, at a Tribute
Brunch, 11 a.m. Oct. 23 at Temple
Beth El.
Howard A. Gilbert, honorary
vice president of the American
Jewish Committee, will present
the Distinguished Community Ser-
vice Award; the "Ventura String
Quartet," featuring members of
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
,will be the morning's entertain-
ment.
Mary Shapero serves on the
National Board of Governors of
AJC and the Advisory Board of
Friends of the Detroit Public Li-
brary. She continues to provide
leadership for the Planned Par-
enthood League, League of Women
Voters of Detroit and Jewish Vo-
cational Service. She serves as
chair of the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin
Memorial Fund and co-chair of the
Ruth Franklin Einstein Education
Assistance Fund.
A longtime professional fund-
raiser, she is a principal in Shap-
ero/Gordin Associates and the
co-founder of the Michigan Chap-
ter of the National Association of
Fund-raising Executives.

Beginning 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23, a
weekly one-hour seminar will com-
mence in the home of Rabbi Her-
shel Finman, 236110 Gardner, Oak
Park.
The topic will be "Combatting
Depression with the Aid of the
Kabbala" which will focus on vari-
ous techniques prescribed by the
Kabbalistic texts. The course will
continue through December and is
open to the public. No prerequisite
of the Kabbala is necessary, and
one need not be depressed to at-
tend.
There is no charge but reserva-
tions are required as space is lim-

The annual fall Genealogy Work-
shop of the Jewish Genealogical So-
ciety of Michigan will take place

Chicago Exhibit
A tour to visit the Chicago exhibit
of "becoming American Women:
Clothing and the Jeish Immigrant
Experience: 1880-1920" is planned
for Dec. 7 by the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan.
This day-long trip by air will vis-
it the major new naitonal exhibit
at the Chicago Historical. Society,
which organized the exhibit. Fol-
lowing lunch, the group will visit
the Spertus Meuseum.
Departure from Metro Airport
will be at 8:15 a.m. with a return
scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Reserva-

GP Council
Hosts Talisman
The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council
will host a lecture by Mark Talis-
man 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Grosse
Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150
Maumee, Grosse Pointe. Mr. Tal-
isman, the founding vice chairman
of the United States Holocaust
Memorial Council and Museum in
Washington, D.C., will focus his
lecture on the development of the
museum: "From Drawing Board
to Reality." He also will be avail-
able for questions on current for-
eign policy regarding both the
Society Union and Eastern Europe.
Mr. Talisman founded the pro-
gram which is conducted at the
Kennedy School of Government at
Harvard to orient and instruct new
members of Congress. During his
tenure at the CJF Washington Ac-
tion Office, he created the Match-
ing Grant Program.
The lecture is cosponsored by
the Grosse Pointe Jewish Coun-
cil and the Jewish Federation of
