Hall Of Fame Honor
STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER
re there two more differ-
ent sports than tennis and
football? Probably not, but
there is one common
thread.
Former Bloomfield Hills An-
dover tennis star Jared Miller
and ex-Berkley football standout
Ryan Fried have been named the
1994 male Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame High School
Athletes of the Year.
Abbie Schwarzberg, a former
multi-sport athlete at Berkley,
earned the female Hall of Fame
award. She was profiled in the
Sept. 2 edition of The Jewish
A
News.
All three athletes will be hon-
ored at the Hall of Fame's annu-
al induction dinner in November.
Miller is now a member of the
men's tennis team at the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin. Fried is at
Tulane University, but he won't
play football this fall because he's
still recuperating from a knee in-
jury suffered late in his senior
season at Berkley.
The Michigan High School
Tennis Coaches Association se-
lected Miller to its Class B All-
State team four times in four
years. A player's won-loss record
and his sportsmanship are the
main criteria for All-State
honors.
As a sophomore, Miller cap-
tured the Class B state champi-
onship at No. 2 singles. Twice,
Miller lost in Class B title
matches. He fell at No. 2 singles
"Jared's priorities
are in the proper
order."
— Keith Johnson
as a freshman and No. 1 singles
as a junior. In his senior year,
Miller made it to the Class B
state quarterfinals at No. 1 sin-
gles.
Keith Johnson, the boys ten-
nis coach at Andover since 1966,
lists Miller among his top three
players.
The others are former NCAA
Division II All-American Craig
Wittus and Chip Bagley, a Class
A high school state champion at
No. 1 singles. Johnson ranks
Miller ahead of Wittus and
Bagley in two areas.
"No Andover player I've
coached has a better state tour-
nament record than Jared and
he's the only player I've coached
who was actively recruited by Big
Ten schools," Johnson said.
Miller was respected by his An-
dover teammates. He was voted
one of the squad's tri-captains for
his junior season and he was
the team's sole captain as a
senior.
"It's a real honor to win the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame award because my religion
is very important to me," Miller
said before heading to the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin, where he's
expected to battle for a starting
spot in singles.
A May graduate of the Temple
Israel religious school, Miller rep-
resented Detroit for five years in
the Maccabi Youth Games. Dur-
ing those years, he won two gold,
two silver and three bronze
medals in singles and doubles
tennis.
Miller selected Wisconsin over
Michigan State University and
Penn State University. While he
is undecided on his academic ma-
