MELVIN TAROCKOFF, 68,
of Southfield, died Aug. 26. Mr.
Tarockoff was a machinist for
GM. He was big brother, an of-
ficer and member of the Odd
Fellows, a UAW member. He
also trained Golden Glove box-
ers when he was younger.
He leaves his brothers and
sisters-in-law, William and
Elsie of Southfield, Leonard and
Rosalyn of Montclair, Calif.,
Norman and Ferah of South-
field; sister and brother-in-law,
Bernice and Eugene Waldman

Elias Canetti
New York (JTA) — Elias Canet-
ti, a Sephardic Jew whose writ-
ings about fascism and the pow-
er of the dictator garnered him
the 1981 Nobel Prize for litera-
ture, died Aug. 13 in Zurich. He
was 89 years old.
Born in Ruschuk, Bulgaria,
and raised. in Manchester, Eng-
land; Vienna, Zurich and
Frankfurt, Mr. Canetti was
buried in Zurich next to anoth-
er writer, James Joyce.
He got a Ph.D. in chemistry
from the University of Vienna,
but his devotion was to writing.
His first novel was titled Auto-
da-Fe, the Portuguese term for
"act of faith," used in the
ceremony in which the death
sentence was pronounced on
non-Catholics during the In-
quisition.

ety of Detroit will hold its annu-
al memorial service at Chesed
Shel Emes Cemetery Sept. 11 at
11 a.m.
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz and
Cantor Max Shimansky will par-
ticipate in the service. Members,
friends and their children are in-
vited to attend.
