Elias Canetti New York (JTA) — Elias Canet- ti, a Sephardic Jew whose writ- ings about fascism and the pow- er of the dictator garnered him the 1981 Nobel Prize for litera- ture, died Aug. 13 in Zurich. He was 89 years old. Born in Ruschuk, Bulgaria, and raised. in Manchester, Eng- land; Vienna, Zurich and Frankfurt, Mr. Canetti was buried in Zurich next to anoth- er writer, James Joyce. He got a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Vienna, but his devotion was to writing. His first novel was titled Auto- da-Fe, the Portuguese term for "act of faith," used in the ceremony in which the death sentence was pronounced on non-Catholics during the In- quisition.
