DR. LEO KALLMAN
On August 8, 1994 Dr. Leo Kalman died peacefully in Hollywood, Florida. He
was one month shy of turning 93 years old. having lived a dedicated, caring, fulfilled
life as a member of the Detroit Jewish Community before retiring to Florida in 1988
to reside with his brother, the late Dr. Reuben Kallman. A graveside service was held
at Cloverhill Park Cemetery attended by many nieces, nephews and friends.
A devoted physician, Dr. Kallman practiced medicine for 55 years in the fields
of psychiatry and internal medicine following an education at Wayne (State) University.
In addition to his private practice, he worked as the examining physician of the
Michgian Athletic Board for 10 years, consulting physician of the Wayne County
Friend of the Court, and served as the consulting physician to the Wayne County
Probate Court for 35 years. Dr. Kallman was the recipient of the 50-year gold diploma
presented by the Wayne County and Michigan Medical Societies.
An immigrant to the United States as a youth, appreciation for the benefit of
challenges and hard work molded a man who maintained a strong sense of
responsibility, care, commitment to his community. His involvement in numerous
fraternal, secular and philanthropic organizations included: Downtown Synagogue,
Crisis Club, Shriners, Masons, Lions Club, Zionist Organization of America, American
Israel Friendship League, Jewish Braille Institute of America, American Red Magen
David of Israel, United Negro College Fund, United Home for the Aged, American
Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, Project Hope, Rabbinical Seminary
of America, the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Holocaust Studies.
Dr. Kallman will always be remembered by family and friends for being an
incredibly learned man who enjoyed the art of sharing a good lesson or lovely tale.
He was deeply attached to Jewish learning, having mastered much of the Talmud
prior to studying medicine. A wise man, he had a gift for sharing his care, generosity,
insightfulness, optimism with others. He was a strongly principled man committed
to supporting the values that he was raised with. His warmth and concern for others
lasted until the very end. Intellectual involvement and motivation for a full life were
always prevalent.
Dr. Leo Kallman was the dear brother of the late Dr. David and Dr. Reuben
Kallman, Lillian Tennen and Rose Bakst.

Sonne was a fabric buyer and

was the credit manager at

Sonne was a past president of
Oak Park Kiwanis Club and a
member of Jewish War Veter-
ans.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy;
