ZOA Honors
Irving Laker

Irving Laker has been selected
as the recipient of the Justice
Louis D. Bandeis award of the
Zionist Organization of America.
The award presentation will take
place at ZOA's 61st annual Bal-
four Celebration concert, Sept. 22
at the Fox Theatre.
Irwin Green and Rabbi M.
Robert Syme will serve as co-
chairmen of the Laker Tribute
Committee. Other past presi-
dents of Metro Detroit ZOA will
also be honored on that occasion.
Slated for honors are Dr. Harry
E. August, Leonard Herman, Dr.
Maxwell M. Hoffman, Judge Ira
G. Kaufman, Dr. Sidney Z. Leib,
Milton S. Marwil, Louis Panush,
Sidney Silverman, Carmi M. Slo-
movitz, Rabbi M. Robert Syme
and Sherwin Tukel. Posthumous
tribute also will be paid to de-
parted past presidents Richard
B. Kramer, Dr. Theodore Man-
dell and Philip Slomovitz.
A past president of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek and of Metro
Detroit ZOA, Mr. Laker has been
named chairman of the 1994 din-
ner for the Holocaust Memorial
Center and co-chairman of the
1994 dinner for Israel Bonds. He
is a director of the Clover Hill
Cemetery and is actively involved
with the Jewish Home for Aged,
Allied Jewish Campaign, the He-
brew Benevolent Society, the
Jewish Theological Seminary and
the Jewish National Fund.

On Prayer

and the Midrasha Center for

1-..ski Prayer" at 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at
the Agency for Jewish Education,
21550 W. 12 Mile, Southfield.
Guest speaker will be Edward
Codish, a teacher at Akiva He-
brew Day School, who has writ-
ten his own books, articles and
poems in Hebrew and translated
works by other writers into Eng-
lish.
His professional background
includes computer science, writ-
ing and lecturing. He has held
positions at Rutgers University
in New Jersey, Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity, Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev, University of Wis-
consin, State University of New
York and at Parsons College,
Fairfield, Iowa.
Admission is free, and persons
who have knowledge of or inter-
est in Hebrew are invited.
The lecture is part of the Elul
series of the Midrasha Center of
Adult Jewish Learning.
