DANNY RASKIN LOCAL COLUMNIST
ou could call it 'The house
that two salads built" and
not be far wrong.
Six months after Ron
and Maggie Asmar took over a
closed, bedraggled-looking, par-
tially-burned former party store
back in 1985, they added a cou-
ple of salads to go with their
wines, chocolates, gourmet
cheeses, etc.
They transformed the entire
place into a 2,000-square-foot
Vineyards Wine Cellar where it
emerged into some sort of promi-
nence as the place with those
wonderful salads.
In 1988, only three years after
opening, Ron and Maggie added
another 9,500 square feet ... and
it had grown into a little cafe with
50 seats, deli counters and an
open ceiling with fresh market
ambiance.
It is today beyond recognition
... Much like a chameleon that
made a sudden change ... In July
of this year, Vineyards became
11,000 square feet with entrances
both at the side and front under
a huge, new white facade on
which its name is emblazoned
with neon as if to proudly say,
"Hey! Look at me now!"
The feeling for many used to
be that it was like eating in the
middle of a grocery store ... Not
anymore ... 10 padded booths
now accompany nine 4-top tables
and two 2-tops ... Outside are col-
orful umbrellas over nine tables
on its newly-done patio.
Those two salads have grown
to over 50 ... including 12 pasta
salads, about six fat-free salads,
two seafood salads, and around
15 low fat salads ... Also Mideast-
ern dishes for carry-out and dine
in (humus, taboolee, baba
ghanouge, etc.)
A huge menu blackboard lists
almost 85 sandwiches of every de-
scription ... a salad bar is also
available for both dine in and car-
ry-out along with 10 breads ...
Two cases are now filled with
pastries (New York cheesecake,
German tort, banana nut tort,
Middle East favorites, etc.)... All
salads, by the way, are 100 per-
cent natural — no salt, no sug-
ar or preservatives.
Sure there's still wine and
liquor, about 1,000 brands of
each, and tastefully placed in
front so as not to conflict with the
hardly believable changed over
dining area.
Vineyards now bakes its own
fat-free potato chips, own French
bread, own kaiser rolls, own crois-
sants, double-bakes its rye
breads, makes those delicious

y

low-fat and fat-free muffins, own
cookies (six low-fat and fat-free),
three types of brownies (rich dou-
ble fudge, low-fat and fat-free) ...
All in its own, on-the-premises
bake shop.
Two different soups are made
daily and it does a big job on no-
fat cappuccino, decaf cappuccino
and espresso.
Vineyards also makes its own
cherry-chocolate mandelbread.
The atmosphere is a festive
one today with goodies of every
imagination, gourmet jellies,

domain of Shirlee Bloom ... open
every day except Saturday, with
separate cases, separate freezer,
separate counters, etc ... People
eat in or carry-out, and Bloom's
Kosher Catering and Carry-Out
does a whopping business on oc-
casions for all purposes.
Under supervision of the Met-
ropolitan Kashruth Council of
Michigan, a mezuzah hangs on
the front door and mashgichim
are there around the clock, su-
pervising ingredients for kishke,
kreplach, knaidlach, stuffed cab-

dressings, candies and so much
more as from the ceiling hang
garlic, cheese, salami, dried pep-
pers, baskets of every size and
shape ... The "little Vineyards of
yesteryears" that has grown up
into one of so much respect now
has two huge walk-in coolers and
a large walk-in freezer.
With Ron and Maggie are son
Tony, 17, stock manager; daugh-
ter, Angela, 15, cashier; Maggie's
sisters, May Asso, manager; and
Maha Azzo, bookkeeper and
cashier.
When it originally opened in
1985 there were just Ron, Mag-
gie and May ... Now Vineyards
has about 20 employees that in-
clude 10 professional cooks ... It
pridefully holds a 95 percent
score given about a month ago by
the Oakland County Health
Dept. and is open seven days a
week, Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to
5 p.m.
A completely separate entity
at Vineyards is the glatt kosher

bage, farfel, beef stew, var-
nishkes, gefilte fish, breaded veal
chops, chopped liver, vegetari-
an chopped liver, turkey burgers,
veggie burgers, salmon burgers,
soups, salads, Anna brown pota-
toes, old-fashioned meat loaf, bar-
b-q short ribs, chicken asparagus,
veggie dishes like veggie cabbage,
burgers, egg rolls, pastas, etc., in-
cluding the excellent kosher
frozen foods prepared by Shirlee.
There is also a full line of deli
meats by the pound or sand-
wiches on double-baked rye, roll-
up sandwiches and meat or dairy
trays ... Shirlee's foods are cooked
from scratch, with many folks
coming lunch time to have baked
turkey burgers and salmon pat-
ties on onion roll ... All in all,
Shirlee has 25 kosher entrees
from which to select, including
items like chicken Caesar salad,
mostaccioli with vegetable mari-
nara sauce, minestrone soup,
duck a la orange, veal piccante,
chicken Kiev, pepper steak,
chicken stir fry, etc.
