She is no newcomer to the
business of kosher eating ... Her
parents, Harry and Lil, began
their Mayfair Kosher Catering in
1951 on Dexter and Davison ...
When Harry passed on in 1958,
Lil took over the business ...
Shirlee received excellent train-
ing from her mother, working
alongside the late Lil Bloom for
many years before taking over as
the official kosher caterer for Con-
gregation Beth Shalom in Oak
Park.
Two separate worlds within
the confines of one huge building

cal supermarket or other places.
Why not so long as they are
not mixed in any way ... Kosher
and non-kosher under the same
roof is approved by all kasruth
supervision when each is dis-
tinctively separate?
What Ron and Maggie Asmar
have done with their Vineyards
is little short of amazing ...
Bloom's Kosher Catering and
Carry-out within its confines has
achieved results of the highest
mark.
Vineyards ...Bloom's Kosher
Catering ... two clearly different
units within themselves striving
for one goal ... satisfaction to
their individual customers ... and
achieving it.
THE HOLE DUG by Amici's
on W. 12 Mile was just too big for
Nino Cutraro to dig out of ... Poor
advice at the beginning, and
when proper alterations were fi-
nally made it was too late ...As a
result, Amici's is closed ... but
will reopen around Aug. 15 as Po-
modoro Cucina Al Fresco by fel-
lows who not only know Italian
food, but most important, what
and how it should be served ...
Because of this, they probably
won't make the same mistake.
Involved are Executive Chef
Joe Beato, also owner of 11 Cen-
tro Ristorante on Lothrup (which
he will still keep), Chef Craig Fa-
hoone, formerly at St. Joseph's
Hospital, Chef Max Winkle, Joe's
assistant at II Centro, and his
brothers, John and Vito Beato.
Pomodoro will feature tradi-
tional Italian dishes which peo-
ple can readily relate, plus Joe's
bigness on HeartSmart items ...
all with proper pricing, too.
Folks who have parties booked
at the former Amici's need not be
alarmed ... Joe will honor them
all at Pomodoro ... Nino contin-
ues to own and operate his Ulti-
mate Sports Bar and Metro
Musicafes around town.
RECENT PHONE call from
New York was another invite for
localite photojournalist Linda
Solomon to appear live again on
the ABC "Good Morning Ameri-
ca" TV show ... It aired last Sun-
day with Linda giving vacation
photography tips ... She had
been on the show in June, talk-
ing about introducing children to
photography.
RIALTO CAFE is a name
that brings a lot of good memo-
ries ... but none better than the
two-for-one and single dinners
that Charlie Pappas started back
in 1974 ... When he sold a few
years ago, people found other
places to go but always talked of
Rialto with reverence.
Well, it is finally back ... so is
Charlie ... with those home-
made, very low-priced two-for-
one and single dinners ... on
Woodward, just south of Nine
Mile in Ferndale, plus parking at
a back entrance ... 12-ounce
whitefish, fresh turkey right off
the bird, veal parmesan and veal
chops with real veal, not imita-
tion, etc., in a large list of entrees.
... The return of owner Charlie
Pappas is also a big, welcome
sight.
11TH HOLE at Franklin
Hills Country Club gives plea-
sure in more ways than one ...
It's also the site of Dr. Bill Ross
and wife Florine Mark Ross'
beautiful and spacious home ...
Wonderfully comfortable with
truly great lived-in features.
This was the scene for about
200 people who came to the first
official event by the newly-formed
local chapter of Gilda's Club,
founded by Bernice Gadon, Mar-
cia Gershenson, Jacqueline
Grekin, Ina Kadish, Gerri Lester,
Maureen Martinez, Sherry
Medsker and Carol Silverman.
It is named in honor of the late
former localite, comedienne Gil-
da Radner, helping people with
cancer free of charge to actively
involve themselves in building ef-
fective social and emotional sup-
port as a supplement to regular
medical care ... something Gilda
had wanted ... Funding is by so-
licitation from private individu-
als, corporations and foundations
so as to soon have a full-fledged
program.
Walk-around food at the abode
of Bill and Florin was donated
by Andy's Cafe, Annabelle's, E.G.
Nick's, Golden Phoenix, Matt
Brady's, Peking House, Peppina's
and others.
For more info, call Gilda's Club
Metro Detroit, 851-6557.
SONG STYLIST Marla Jack-

ingham, July 31, 11 a.m. to 3
