talked, a group of Israelis were
talking animatedly in Hebrew
nearby. Others in the cosmopoli-
tan hotel were speaking Ger-

Not only do Jewish guests en-
joy camaraderie with other Jews
when they visit Baden, but they
also find a small town with an ac-
tive congregation and a syna-
gogue on Parkstrasse, where
tourists are welcomed to attend
Shabbat services.
They also come, of course, to
enjoy an serene Swiss town with
scenic beauty, fresh air and the
thermal springs. For Moshe and
Berthe Wilensky, that combina-
tion was just what they wanted.
"We came to relax and have a
peaceful time," said Moshe Wilen-
sky, "so we're really enjoying
this."
"We love Switzerland," added
Berthe. "It's cool; it's pleasant,
and nature is beautiful here." ❑

THE JEWISH NEWS
Malaysia
Reverses Ban
Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
Australian Jewish leaders
have welcomed Malaysia's
decision to overturn its ban
on the film Schindler's List,
but note that the govern-
ment there has not yet actu-
ally approved the film for
screening.
Anwar Ibrahim,
Malaysia's deputy prime
minister and a likely suc-
cessor to Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad as
leader of the Muslim coun-
try, said the Cabinet observ-
ed that "the film deals with
the atrocities of the Nazis
against the Jews in Krakow,
Poland, during the Second
World War" and that the
film would be screened "in
accordance with normal
guidelines."
Last month, the Malaysian
government banned the
film, calling it too sympa-
thetic to the Jews and too
critical of the Nazis.
In a letter to the film's
international distributor,
the Malaysian film censor
said, "The story of the film
reflects the privilege and the
virtues of a certain race
only."
In announcing the rever-
sal, the deputy prime min-
ister said the censor's
reasoning had been
"unacceptable.' He said,
"The Nazis were brutal and
cruel. And the victims, be
they Jews or non-Jews, were
victims, and our sympathies
should be with them."
