high miniature pool filled with
thermal water and intended just
for the hands. Soaking one's
hands in the mineral-rich water
is considered rejuvenating and
refreshing.
Indeed it was, as the three of
us sat with out hands in the wa-
ter. It was an unusual way to
meet one of Israel's leading com-
posers. The prolific Mr. Wilensky
has composed over 100 songs,
and in 1983 was the recipient of
the prestigious Israel Prize.
But on this late summer day
he and his wife — a former Israeli
actress — were simply enjoying
the spa. "We're here to relax and
to have peace," said Mr. Wilen-
sky, born in Poland but a resident
of Israel for 61 years.
After relaxing at the hand pool,
the Wilenskys stopped to take a
sip of mineral water." Not exact-
ly like Coke!" quipped Moshe
Wilensky as he slowly sipped it.
They were not the only Israelis
in Baden during my visit. In fact,
they were part of a group of 20 Is-
raelis staying at the Veranahof
hotel where I was also based. All
summer, this hotel and others
had hosted Jewish guests.
Jews still living in
Europe enjoy a
summer reunion in
Baden with friends
who have emigrated
to Israel.
"The attraction for Jewish
travelers to come to Baden goes
back to World War II," explained
Roland Scherer, manager of the
Veranahof. He confirmed what I
had heard on my first visit: Jews
who managed to escape the Nazis
and flee to neutral Switzerland
often found a refuge in Baden.
"There was a small but very ac-
tive Jewish community which
helped them," said Mr. Scherer.
Some of them were put up at
the spa hotels before they went
on to permanent homes else-
where. Some started returning
to Baden year after year, enjoy-
ing reunions with people who had
shared that difficult time to-
gether.
Ever since then, the spa hotels
have had Jewish visitors, not only
from those who found refuge
here, but from European-born Is-
raelis who welcome the cool cli-
mate in summer. In fact, Mr.
Scherer noted that for the first
three weeks in August, 80 per-
cent of the guests at the Verana-
hof were Jewish.
Many are longtime guests who
return year after year. "One cou-
ple returned this summer for the
time," noted Mr. Scherer.
