where the mineral water was dis-

a view of the Jura Moun-
tains beyond, the outdoor
pool was an inviting sight.
But the indoor pool was even
larger, so that's where I decided
to swim. I swam slowly — very
slowly — for this was not a typi-
cal swimming pool. The water
temperature was 96.8 degrees
Fahrenheit, and it's hard to swim
vigorously in water this warm.
Not only was I going especial-
ly slowly, but I was enjoying the
novel sensation of not wearing
goggles. I didn't need them. This
water was so pure and free of
chemicals there was no way it
could irritate my eyes.
I was swimming in hot ther-
mal spring water that comes di-

covered by the Romans. It was
first mentioned as aqua helveti-
cae by the Roman historian Tac-
itus in the year 69. By the end of
the Middle Ages, Baden had be-
come one of the most famous spa
resorts in Europe.
Modern spa visitors also enjoy
the hot thermal springs of Baden.
Even in the dead of winter, there
are swimmers in the outdoor
pool. "You can see the snow all
around, and people are swim-
ming outside," said Ms. Mueller.
Still others drink the water. In-
side one of the spa hotels, for in-
stance, Ms. Mueller pointed out
not only the extensive spa facili-
ties — everything from Jacuzzis
to water therapy room — but also

A thermal-water pool in Baden.

rectly from the ground and has
the richest mineral content of any
water in Switzerland. It is this
thermal spring water that has
made Baden the premier spa re-
sort in Switzerland.
It was my second visit to this
picturesque town, which is just a
20-minute train ride from Zurich,
and I was again enjoying its spa
ambiance and scenic beauty.
The thermal waters in which
I was swimming were from the
very same springs the Romans
had discovered centuries ago.
"They would take long baths
outdoors, sometimes for eight
hours at a time." said guide Elis-
abeth Mueller, who next day took
me on a tour of the spa area: the
thermal pools plus the cluster of
hotels, known as "the Spa Ho-
tels," situated around a court-
yard.
Standing in this courtyard, Ms.
Mueller leaned over to show me
the spot in the courtyard which
is presumed to be the original site

a drinking fountain with a stack
of paper cups placed nearby.
"Don't expect it to taste won-
derful," she cautioned, as I sipped
the warm water with its slightly
medicinal taste.
Drinking this water is a daily
ritual for many Baden natives.
"Many of them come here every
day, just to drink a cup of ther-
mal water," said Ms. Muller, "It's
thought to be very good for
health."
Besides its benefits and plea-
sures as a spa, Baden has still an-
other attraction for Jewish
visitors. Especially in summer,
it's frequented by Israelis and Eu-
ropean Jews who have a special
fondness for Baden; so it's a place
that also offers the opportunity
to meet Jews from diverse places.
"We like to escape the heat of
Israel in the summer," said
Bertha Wilensky from Tel Aviv.
