Council of Australian Jewry
received wide coverage in
the Asian media, moderate
Malaysian voices called for
the government to review its
decision on the Holocaust
film.
Kadir Jason, editor of the
New Straits Times, an Eng-
lish- language paper
published in the Malaysian
capital of Kuala Lumpur,
wrote a column saying "I
can only express my shock at
the arrogance of the board"
and "the kind of justification
it put up to explain its ac-
tions."
Applauding Anwar's over-
turning of the ban, Colin
Rubenstein, the editorial
chairman of Australia/Israel
Publications, applauded the
fact that the criticism of the
ban "had the desired effect."
"The film has a universal
significance and it is to be
hoped the Malaysian censors
do not find a new reason to
prevent their public viewing
it," Mr. Rubenstein told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Michael Danby, public af-
fairs consultant to the Ex-
ecutive Council of
Australian Jewry, said that
"the most charitable spin"
on Mr. Mahathir's "many
dubious pronouncements
about Jews, Europeans and
other non-Malays is that he
has simply sought to divert
steam from Malaysia's own
ethnic/Islamic pressure
cooker."
Mr. Mahathir has
previously banned the play-
ing of a Jewish- titled sym-
phonic piece by a Jewish
composer by the New York
Philharmonic, which cancel-
ed its engagement in
Malaysia in response. He
has also blamed Jews for
controlling the media. ❑

No Action
Against Goren

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
attorney general has told the
High Court that he will take
no action against former
Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren,
who has called on Israeli
soldiers to refuse to obey any
orders that call for the
evacuation of Jews from set-
tlements in the territories.
Private citizens had peti-
tioned the High Court to
order the government to act
against Mr. Goren, who had
said that his call to the
soldiers was based on
Halachah, or Jewish law.
Attorney General Michael
Ben-Yair told the court that
the government's policy was
one of restraint. ❑
