YOUNG EARS, OLD HEARING
A recent study from Ball State Univer-
sity shows that students who regularly use
stereo headphones display a hearing loss
usually associated with older adults. Many
people begin to experience a decline in sen-
sitivity to high frequencies in their fifties
due to the age-related condition known as
presbycusis. The younger headphone users
in this study also had trouble hearing
sounds in the high pitch range. This area
of speech involves the "S," "F," "T," and
"TH" sounds which are among the most
crucial to understanding English. Those
who cannot hear these sounds often blame
it on the mumbling of others. Unfortunately,
young people who crank up the volume on
their headsets may be blaming others for
mumbling more than they should be.
When wearing a personal stereo, you
should always keep the volume low enough
so that you can hear what is going on around
you. If you suspect that you may have in-
curred hearing loss, visit us at LUCAS-CRUZ
HEARING AID SERVICE fora comprehensive

son's headphones standing next to you, the
volume is up too loud.
