he complex and challeng-
ing issue of resettling
refugees from Nazi Ger-
many is the focus of the
new America's Fair Share:
The Admission and Reset-
tlement of Displaced Per-
sons, 1945-1952 (Wayne State
University Press) by Haim Ge-
nizi.
Mr. Genizi discusses in his
book the attitude of American
Christians toward refugees dur-
ing the Holocaust ("decidedly
apathetic"), and after the war
when church leaders found that
many of those trying to enter
the United States were not
Jews but Christians escaping
communism.
He considers the relations be-
tween Christian relief agencies,
the American Army in Europe
and the Displaced Persons com-
mission, as well as the inter-
faith controversy that came
with the U.S. decision to admit
Nazi collaborators.
Mr. Genizi is director of the
Begin Institute for the Study of
Underground and Resistance
Movements and professor of
American history at Bar-Ilan
University in Israel.

tapestry of tradition, assimila-

spirit of Isaac Bashevis Singer.
