_ oio OFF ALL VIE 7/461,

Only a matter of minutes, I
said to myself, any second now
the Germans will find us. It will
be quick, right in the courtyard
up against the wall. A quick bul-
let to the brain would be mer-
ciful ... Tears and saliva flowed
from me; all my sphincters
opened; nothing was left inside
but the faint palpitation of
waiting.

ixty years ago, Henry
Roth wrote a magnum
opus, Call It Sleep, and
then he disappeared.
Most believed Mr. Roth had
died. In fact, he had worked a
variety of jobs - from blueber-
ry picker to a psychiatric at-
tendant - then settled in
Albuquerque, N.M., in the last
house (that once served as a fu-
neral parlor) on a dead-end
street.
Now, he has written again -
a novel called Mercy of a
Rude Stream (St. Martin's
Press) that critics are labeling
"monumental."
Henry Roth was born in 1906
in the Ukraine. As a young boy,
he came with his parents to the
United States and settled in the
Lower East Side of New York.
He finished Call It Sleep in 1934
when he was 28, and was
deeply disappointed when it
sold a limited number of copies
and received mixed reviews.
Thirty years later, Call It
Sleep the story of David Sc-
hearl's coming of age in the
Lower East Side - was pub-
lished in paperback. It became
an international best seller.
For years, Mr. Roth suffered
with writer's block. Only in
1979 did he feel ready to again
start writing.

Mercy of a Rude Stream: A
Star Shines Over Mt. Morris
Park is the first volume in a six-
volume literary series. It chron-
icles the lives of Ira Stigman
and his extended immigrant
family from the start of World
War I through the early 1920s.
Foreign rights already have
been sold to Israel, Italy, Brazil,
Spain, England, France, Swe-
den and Holland.
The second volume in the se-
ries will be published January
1995.
trange and Unexpect-
ed Love (Ktav Publish-
ing) by Fanya Gottesfeld
Heller tells the true story
of a Jewish family saved during
the Holocaust by two Christians
- Sidor, a Polish peasant, and
Jan, a Ukrainian militiaman.
Fanya was a young woman
when the Nazis took control of
her hometown, Skala in east-
ern Poland. The first to come to
her aid was Jan, whom she had
never met but who had admired
her from afar. The two soon fell
in love, but everything changed
after the war. Fanya's father
vanished, and the family sus-
pected Jan had killed him.
In Strange and Unexpected
Love, Mrs. Heller recalls the
constant anguish of waiting to
be taken by the Nazis:
