parents of children who seem especially trou-
bled by the pressure problem, West Bloom-
field physician David S. Rosenberg, father of
four, recommends preventive medicine. 'The
simplest thing really is just to give them over-
the-counter Dimetapp, or, for infants, Tri-
aminic Oral Infant Drops. Both are
anti-histamine decongestants with flavors kids
like," he says. Give an hour or so before you're
ready to board the plane and it will open up
the eustachian tubes.
Another key strategy for family air travel?
Ask lots of questions of the airline when you
book the reservation.
Inquire about special meals. With enough
advance notice (usually at least 24 hours), the
larger airlines can provide vegetarian, low-
salt, lactose-free, diabetic, low-cholesterol,
low-fat, fruit plate, kosher or kid's meals. Cur-
rently, we are a five fruit-plate family, but when
the kids were little, they loved the kid's meal—

usually a hot dog, hamburger, or peanut but
sandwich, with crackers, cheese, fruit and
cookies. Sometimes these meals come with
playful extras. Delta, for example, offers Dis-
ney-themed packaging that can greatly ex-
tend a child's meal-time attention span. And
United's McDonald's Fun Meal comes with
a place mat to color and a toy airplane.
Ask about child fares and free travel. Chil-
dren under 2 can fly free on most airlines, but
they will not have an assigned seat. Before
you jump at the savings, think carefully about
your child's capacity for sitting still. Unless
there happens to be a vacant seat next to
yours, you'll have to hold your child for the
entire trip. If your flight is not fully booked,
consider asking for two non-contiguous seats
for you and your spouse, then hope the seat
in between stays empty. Many airlines ask
you to wait until one month prior to departure
for specific seating assignments.
Make sure your row is one with an extra
oxygen mask built in. (Each row has one ex-
tra oxygen mask, so if two adults are taking
two infants on a plane, they shouldn't sit in
the same row.)
If you decide to purchase a ticket for your
small child, be aware that the Federal Avia-
tion Administration requires that the child be
properly secured, but recommends using ap-
