proved car seats for children under 2. Each
airline interprets this differently, so ask when
booking your flight if a child restraint is re-
quired or recommended. Also be sure to ask
if there are any restrictions associated with
your use of a car seat. Some airlines will pre-
fer to seat you and your child in seats away
from emergency exits, or request that the
child and restraint be placed in the window
seat or in one of the middle row of seats in or-
der not to inconvenience or endanger other
passengers.

Another strategy is to ask to be seated in
the roomier bulkhead area, usually located in
the first row of coach, just behind first-class
seating. Some airlines (Northwest, for ex-
ample) provide travel bassinets; others allow
you to use your own portable bassinet on
board. That way, if you're sitting in the bulk-
head, your child can use the bassinet to sleep
or play.
When Atlanta residents Robin and Rick
Halpern flew to Israel with two small children,
the bulkhead seats and a bassinet came in
handy. "I had a huge bag full of food, toys and
changes of clothing," says Robin. "It wouldn't
have fit under a seat, but I could leave it out
in the bulkhead area. Also, my 1-year-old
daughter was able to sit and play in the
bassinet." The bassinet, like other oversized
luggage, can be stored in a closet during take-
off and landing.
Other requests worth making.
• Find out if you can gate-check your
stroller and car seat. If so, take it to the gate
when you are boarding and the attendant will
check it through and see that it gets placed
last in the baggage compartment. Many trav-
elers feel gate-checked items survive the trip
' better than those checked in earlier with the
baggage.
• Ask for a non-stop flight when possible.
Running through airports to catch a con-
necting plane or waiting during a lay-over is
difficult for kids.
