Ferndale to sponsor a sum-
mer art fair, which will
take place in August.
The Ferndale Merchants
Association hadn't been
active for ten years, Ms.
Ketren says, until Ms.
Jacobi and 14 other busi-
ness owners formed the
Ferndale Business
Association to replace it.
Until that time, downtown
marketing efforts had been
disjointed. Business owners
didn't interact with each
other. When the new down-
town manager began work-
ing with the city in
December 1992, many long-

Kathy Jacobi has
brought a little
zest to Ferndale.

coming reception, "and
found out they were next-
door neighbors!"
Ms. Jacobi opened
Ubiquity around the same
time that Ms. Ketren
became downtown manag-
er. From the first day, she
made a point of introducing
herself to everyone for
blocks around. Her tiny
storefront gallery, squeezed
between an optometrist's
office and a beauty-supply
store on a busy strip of
Nine Mile Road, is as
unique as its owner. The
store contains a variety of
art and collectibles — funky
car-shaped erasers, vintage
clothing, African masks,
even an 18th-century oil
painting. Ms. Jacobi also
takes items on consign-
ment, and is always looking
for new local artists and
unusual collectibles.
Ubiquity is "not just an
art gallery," she insists. She
mounts one new show a
month, featuring either an
individual artist or group of
artists, but envisions
Ubiquity as more. "I want
this gallery to become a cul-
tural arts center," Ms.
Jacobi says. She intends to
offer classes, and sees her
gallery as an avenue for all
talented artists, both
known and unknown, to
display their work.
Ms. Jacobi's interest in
local artists extends beyond
Ubiquity Gallery. Her
