Young Israel Council
Honors Local Couples

The Young Israel Council of
Metropolitan Detroit will
hold its annual dinner June
14 at the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Center.
The Council is composed of
four local Young Israel
branches: Young Israel of
Greenfield, Young Israel of

baseball team and is a coach
for the Young Israel Little
League. He is a past presi-
dent and past chairman of
the board of Young Israel of
Greenfield and 2nd vice
president of the synagogue.
He has served as .a board
member at Yeshiva Beth

Woods since their move to
Oak Park in 1986. Jules

Sam and Belle Platt, Young

Richard and Lea Luger,
Young Israel of West
Bloomfield.
Larry Singal grew up in
the Young Israel movement,
a participant in the Young
Israel of Dexter youth pro-
grams and Bnei Akiva
(Mizrachi). He is a member
of the Young Israel adult

Yehudah and as financial
secretary of Mikveh Israel
and is on the executive com-
mittee of the Merkaz. He is
an administrative law judge
for the state of Michigan.
Sandy Singal was active
in the Toronto Bnei Akiva
youth movement. She has
served as past president
and chairman of the board
of Yeshivat Akiva PTA and
treasurer of Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah PTA. She has held
various chairmanships at
Young Israel of Greenfield
and is a member of the
Ladies House Committee at
the synagogue.
Jules and Binnie Kohenn

has served as member of the
board at Young Israel of
Oak-Woods, chairman of the
ad journal committee and
was financial secretary. He
is active in the Shriner's
child care program. He also
is a member of Jewish War
Veterans Silverman Post
135.
Edna "Binnie" Kohenn is
a registered nurse. She was
active in the PTA of the
Akiva Jewish day school in
Chicago and is a member of
Hadassah, JWV Silverman
Post 135 and the Young
Israel Sisterhood.
Sam and Belle Platt have
been involved in the Young
Israel movement in the met-
ropolitan Detroit area for
the past 60 years. Sam has
served in almost every
capacity in the Young Israel
of Dexter, and later at
Young Israel of Oak-Woods,
including president of each
of those branches. Sam also
served as the first president
of the Young Israel Council
of Metro politan Detroit and
has played a role in the
development and growth of
all four branches. For the
past 30 years he has served
as a regional vice president
of the National Council of
Young Israel. He helped
organize the Young Israel

Friends of Akiva, Sinai
Hospital Guild and ORT.
Richard and Lea Luger
have been members of
Young Israel since their
marriage in 1979. Origi-
nally members of Young
Israel of Greenfield, they
were founding members of
Young Israel of West
Bloomfield. Richard has
served as president of the
synagogue and has been the
primary Ba'al Koreh since
its formation. He has served
as a member of the ritual
committee and has orga-
nized High Holy Day ser-
vices for the past three
years.
Lea has served two terms
as vice president of the
Young Israel of West
Bloomfield and is currently
corresponding secretary.
She has served as vice pres-
ident of Young Israel
Council and has been the
West Bloomfield delegate to
Council for the past three
years.
She is an active volunteer
at COTS (Coalition for
Temporary Shelter), My
Sister's Place (a home for
abused women) and Yad
Ezra.

UJF Meeting June 9

Leonard Smith, president and
trustee of the Skillman
Foundation, will keynote the
United Jewish Foundation
annual meeting and reception
5 p.m. June 9 at the . Max M.
Fisher Building.
The UJF works with
Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit to oversee the
maintenance of communal
properties and manages en-
dowment funds for future
communal needs. The UJF
funds enhance those raised by

the Allied Jewish Campaign.
Jack A. Robinson,president
of the UJF, will deliver the
Foundation's annual report.
Election and installation of
officers and board members
will take place and recent
donors to the Federated
Endowment Fund will be hon-
ored.

Israel Bonds Week '93, a
nationwide effort to accel-
erate the flow of Israel
Bonds-generated capital to
Israel, will take place in
metro Detroit and other
communities throughout
the country June 4-13.
During the course of the
week, members of the
metro Detroit community
will be asked to make an
investment in Israel
through the purchase of
Israel Bonds.
Activities will include a
Golda Meir Club luncheon
honoring past Metro
Detroit Women's Division
chairwoman Meryl C.
Podolsky 11 a.m. June 4
and the Congregation B'nai
David/Israel Bonds city-
wide dinner honoring
George Vine 6 p.m. June
13. In addition, the local
Israel Bonds office will be
open from 9-9 p.m. June 7-
10 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June
13.

Hillel Plans
School Reunion

The Hillel Alumni Com-
mittee will host its second
annual reunion May 30 at
the home of Sondra Berlin
in West Bloomfield. All col-
lege age or older alumni
are invited to attend along
with their spouses or
guests. Past students are
considered alumni even if
the did not graduate Hillel
Day School.
There is a charge, with
all proceeds benefiting
Hillel Day School. Past and
present teachers are also
invited to attend.
