S

ports enthusiasts from
around the world have
found a way to beat the
"beaten path" — through
sporting holidays in Israel.
They can catch all the same
sites as regular tourists do,
but through it all, they'll be
flexing their bodies as well as
their minds.
According to Natan
Shapiro, director of the
Foreign Relations Depart-
ment of the Society for the
Protection of Nature in Israel
(SPNI), the last six months
have seen a significant in-
crease in participation in
sporting holidays.
"All our tours are running
at full capacity. Last year a
10-seater bus would have
been enough for the average
group. Now we use buses that
hold up to 50 people," says Mr.
Shapiro.
You don't need a calculator
to decide whether a 157 per-
cent increase (600,000
tourists) in tourism is good for
business. According to Esther
Sultan, director of the
Tourism Ministry's Depart-
ment of Statistics, all figures
are up by comparison with
the same period last year,
when the Gulf War killed
tourism.
Now these tourists have an
even larger smorgasbord of
holidays to choose from. Gone
are the days when tourists
were restricted to only philan-
thropic missions: same fancy
hotel, same bus and same
sights.
While many still come on
fund-raising junkets, holidays
have become much more in-
novative. Now sports activists
can choose anything from
camel trekking through the
desert, diving with former
Israeli navy seals, rappeling
down mountains in historical-
ly rich areas, even spelunking
(exploring caves).
The Action Club in rIbl Aviv,
for example, offers 20- to
35-year-old tourists a chance
to see the entire country
through the eyes of an
athlete.
The four-week program is
sectioned into one-week
modules. "If you select the en-
tire package, there is no ma-
jor sight in Israel you will
miss," says manager Yuval
Dunficoy, a current member of
Israel's J-24 sailing team.
"But Americans, for example,
don't have such long vaca-

tions. So we provide one-week
options. People can pick bas-
ed on their sporting interests
and their desire to see certain
parts of the country."
The four week-long Action
Club options are diving, sail-
ing, rappeling and camel trek-
king. Diving begins in the an-
cient Roman harbor of
Caesarea and finishes in the
Red Sea at Eilat. The sailing
module includes windsurfing,
volleyball and boogie-
boarding with a former
Israeli windsurfing cham-
pion. Cultural activities, an
integral part of all sporting
holidays, include visiting the
Diaspora Museum, exploring
Tel Aviv's nightlife and the
ancient city of Jaffa, the

world's oldest port, party
cruises and campfires.
The rappeling option,
directed by the former head of
the rappeling unit in the
Israel Army, begins near the
Jerusalem hills. There, par-
ticipants brave through caves
with ancient Hebrew writing.
As they head north, toward
the area rich with Bar
Kochba history, the trip will
include rafting, kayaking and
even a 15-meter water slide.

The final option includes
several days of camel trekk-
ing through the desert, a
bedouin feast, a two-day hike
in the Negev, then straight to
Eilat.
Not exactly what you want?
There's more. Maalash
Shcharoot, a 10-year-old
moshav-based company, 85
kilometers north of Eilat, of-
fers a variety of tours from
religious sites to those ex-
