plaining the ecological
system of the desert. Offering
four-, six- and eight-day
outings, participants come
from all over the world. "We
even have Bible tours for
Christians," says tour guide
and business manager, Sefi
Hanegbi.
Once a year, Maalash
Shcharoot offers a 10-day ar-
chaeological trip. All tours in-
clude lots of hiking, beautiful
views and are packed with
information.
SPNI offers yet more
outings for serious hikers,
from the Golan and the Ju-
dean Hills to Ein Gedi-
Masada. Options include hik-
ing and camel riding for up to
nine hours a day. Said Shari
Steele of New York, after a
Wadi Qelt hike, "The tour
was great. It was a perfect
combination of observation,
hiking, swimming and a
history lesson."
Jenny Parks of Tyler. Texas,
spent her day trip in the
Galilee and Golan. "I
thoroughly enjoyed all
aspects of the trip. I'd never
been to a kibbutz before. And
the guide felt such passion for
Israel. His knowledge of the
flora and fauna made this trip
incredibly educational."
The most frequently heard
response to sporting holidays
is "We learned to love the
country," says Natan Shapiro.
"Israelis say the same things.
When you walk the country,
you see how much we have
and you come to understand
and love it ❑

Johannesburg (JTA) —
Against a background of po-
litical uncertainty in South
Africa, Jewish organizations
in this city have set up an
umbrella body to coordinate
community policies.
The Johannesburg Jewish
Council will be "advisory
and consultative, not
prescriptive," said Mendel
Kaplan, who spearheaded its
establishment.
Mr. Kaplan is chairman of
the board of governors of the
Jewish Agency and chair-
man of the executive of the
World Jewish Congress.
He spoke at a time when
negotiations between the
government and the African
National Congress on a new
federal system have pursued
a rocky course.
