Your host the Berkowitz Family 3201 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, Fla. 33140
brought to Cochin from
Canton in the mid-18th
century by Ezekial
Rahabi, who had com-
mercial interests in that
city. He was also respon-
sible for the clock tower
which tops the building.
Wooden benches line
the high, white-washed
walls punctuated with
double-tiered rectangular
windows, open to the sun
and occasional breeze.
Delicate glass chande-
liers and opaque white
globes are suspended
from the wooden ceiling.
A flight of wooden steps
in the back of the room
leads up to the open bal-
cony, reserved for women
who wish to worship. The
gracefully arched door-
way adds to the Moorish
quality of the decor.
In the center of the
floor, a raised rounded
bimah (pulpit) commands
attention with its brass
spindles polished to a
high gloss and carved
wood painted in hues of
red, blue and gold. A
wooden platform elevated
on a set of sturdy short
spindles rings the pulpit.
At the front of the
room several tiled steps
lead up to the ark,
ornately carved from
rosewood found in
Kerala's forests and
painted in rich reds and
golds. A deep green and
gold-brocaded curtain
and two swinging doors
conceal several Torahs,
each protected by an
upright cylindrical case
of hand-worked metal.
The man responsible
for the synagogue's pris-
tine condition is caretak-
er Jackie Cohen, one of
the 24 members left in
Cochin's graying Jewish
community. Of Persian
descent, the sprightly,
soft-spoken, barefoot
gentleman clad in a
white cotton tunic, black
trousers and kippah, is
fluent in English and
happy to show visitors
around the tiny piece of
history of which he is
part. ❑
