dearth of locally-produced
television programs, the ten-
der stipulates that 30 percent

"Already a number of tele-
vision programs have been
produced for the second chan-
nel in Neve Ilan," Mr. Porat
says. "In fact, 40 percent of
the studio's facilities are de-
signed specially for television
use."
Mr. Porat also hopes to en-
tice foreign producers. "Euro-
pean television companies
suffer from a chronic lack of
modern studios and produc-
tion facilities," he points out.

active interest." Already a 10-
part television series for Ger-
man TV is being filmed at the
studio.
Foreign movies produced
by the Globus Group, which
owns 85 movie theaters
throughout Israel, have gen-
erated $50 million over the
past six years, in effect all ex-
port income, with each movie
netting profits of some $2 mil-
lion. "We aim to make the stu-
dio complex the Universal
Studios of Israel, where
tourists come to see the spec-
tacle of movie-making," says
Mr. Porat. With Stage A com-
pleted, Stage B, incorporating
a tourist site, will take an es-
timated three years at a cost
of a further $10 million.
"With our highly-trained,
experienced local workforce
there is no longer a need to fly
in cameramen from Honolu-
lu or film editors from
Britain," Mr. Porat says. "And
when it comes to providing ex-
tras and actors, Israel's im-
migrant population comes in
just about every shape, size
and color. Eventually we'll
reach the stage where a pro-
ducer won't have to go on lo-
cation any more," predicts Mr.
Porat. "The studios will con-
tain everything he could pos-
sibly need." ❑

Zionist Press Service.
