Y 0 U' R E
INVITED

Party in the Park!

, the time he was almost
'B drafted into the Israeli
army. He was summoned to
military headquarters three
times before the Israeli brass
finally rejected him because
T he lacked a taudat brit milah
(a certificate of circumci-
sion).
So how does a "nice
Catholic boy" as Mr
Hellman described his early
life, become one of the
, .staunchest defenders of the
Jewish state? Also, why does
'--- a Washington politico on the
, fast track suddenly turn his
back on it to face an unknown
fate?
"In 1974 I became what is
=known as a born-again and
spirit-filled Christian," he
• said. "Once I became a
Christian, it became clear
• that Israel was not only a
present-day state, but also a
' historical context that was
;_,,important to us."
r Two years later, Mr.
> Hellman quit his job in
Washington. "Quite amaz-
cingly, I just knew on a cer-
tain date that I was going to
leave the Senate and go out
• into private life and private
practice, and I felt somehow
I'd go to Israel. It seemed
improbable."
_ Five days after he decided
to quit his Senate job, Mr.
Hellman spoke with a friend
in his church who suggested
they join their pastor's tour
—4o Israel.
In Israel, Mr. Hellman met
with the director of the
Israel Environment Protec-
Jive Services, who had heard
about his legal work on the
environment. Later, the di-
rector was able to offer him a
2 job . to help draft Israel's en-
vironmental laws and
regulations. ❑

Bicyclist Postpones
1000-Mile Solo Race

Doubters who ques-
tioned whether a West
Bloomfield Parks and
'Recreation commissioner
could bicycle 1,000 miles in
three days may feel justified
-=--) now that the attempted feat
has been postponed until
August 14.
Maurice Freed, the 37-
year-old long-distance cyclist
who concocted the gimmick
to raise money for a proposed
activity center in West
Bloomfield, said he had to
• delay the ride due to a low
j sponsorship response. Mr.
-, Freed said he would like 200
I sponsors, but so far only 14
have backed him.
Mr. Freed insisted he will

make the ride next month.
"I will begin on the 19th
regardless," he said.
