hen visiting a for-
eign country, we
often do things we
wouldn't ordinarily do at
home. Even the non-
observant Jewish traveler is
likely to check out the local
synagogue or kosher restau-
rant.
If you find yourself in
Seville, Spain, on a Friday
evening with nothing to do,
for example, you might
phone 427-5517. This is the
number of Simon Hassan
Benasayeq, who manages a
synagogue/apartment for
the 15 Jewish families who
reside in Seville.
Information like this and
the history of Jewish corn-
munities throughout Europe
can be found in a new
guidebook, A Travel Guide
to Jewish Europe by Ben
Frank, a New York public
relations man and well-
heeled traveler.
Mr. Frank, in Detroit this
week to promote the guide,

book covers 10 European
nations, the Scandinavian

countries, plus Turkey and
Greece. -

himself to Benjamin Tudela,
a medieval Jewish traveler
who chronicled Jewish life
throughout the world. He
said American Jews often-
pass up Europe and its Jew-
ish communities. "We go to
Israel, and then we come
back."
But Jewish history can

small group of Marranos met

as Mr. Frank writes in his
book.
French Jews make up the
third largest Jewish com-
munity in the world outside
of Israel. France is one of the
few places that has changed
from predominately
Ashkenazi to Sephardi after
300,000 Jews from North
Africa left to settle in France
during the early 1960s, Mr.
Frank writes.
Mr. Frank doesn't expect '-
