The Arts Foundation of
Michigan, in celebration of
the oldest arts award program
in the state, will honor three
Michigan artists and two
patrons of the arts May 5 at
the Gem Theatre in Detroit.
The 1992 Michigan Arts
Awards winners are Ypsilan-
ti poet, editor and translator,
Clayton Eshleman; Detroit
sculptor, Lois Teicher; and
Detroit percussionist, Roy
Brooks.
The Michigan Patron
Award will be bestowed upon
Mrs. Edith Gilbert of
Charlevoix and Dr. Zalman
(Tiny) Konikow of Bloomfield
Hills.
The Arts Foundation of
Michigan is a 26-year-old fun-
ding organization which sup-
ports individual artists
creating new works of art in
Michigan.

Pottery Hosts
Spring Party

Pewabic Pottery will host its
eighth annual "Spring Party
at the Pottery" 5:30-10 p.m.
May 6.
This year's party will have
a circus theme, complete with
clowns, jugglers and live
entertainment. The admis-
sion price will include food,
drink and valet parking in
addition to all the festivities.
Pewabic also will host its
popular silent auction, featur-
ing work donated by artists
from Michigan and beyond to
benefit the Pottery. All con-
tributions are tax-deductible
and help support Pewabic Pot-
tery's education and exhibi-
tion programs, historic collec-
tions and the operation of its
tile and vessel studios.
The Pottery is located at
10125 East Jefferson. Visitor
hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. For

Russian Conductor
In Concert

The Southfield Symphony
Orchestra, under the baton of
Valery Leonov, guest conduc-
tor from Minsk, Byelorussia,
will perform an all Tschaikov-
sky program 3 p.m. May 3 at
the Southfield High School
Auditorium.
Mr. Leonov is conductor of
the National Symphony Or-
chestra of Byelorussian Radio
and Television and conductor
of the Byelorussia Opera and
Ballet Theatre.
Vladislav Kovalsky, pianist,
will perform Tschaikovsky's
Piano Concerto No. 1.

Youtheatre Stages
Multi-Media Event

The imaginative work of
American artist Alexander
Calder is the inspiration for A
Perfect Balance, Youtheatre's
multimedia stage attraction
May 2. Performances are at
11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the
Detroit Institute of Arts
auditorium.
Recommended for audi-
ences age five and older, A
Perfect Balance celebrates in-
ventiveness — the artist's
desire to create something
different and unique.
