gave a view of the harbor
through a large picture win-
dow that ran the length of the
building . . . People who went
on weekends to Stew Cunn-
ingham's Fisherman's Wharf
that overlooked the St. Clair
River made up their minds
about one thing before going
. . . that standing in line
would be inevitable.
Leo Adler's Harbor Bar was
built on a dock which sur-
rounded a small marina on
the Detroit River at the foot
of Fairview . . . It was direct-
ly opposite the heart of Belle
Isle and during the racing
season the huge unlimited
powerboats made their turns
at this point . . . Harold and
Wyn Landis, with cheese
blintzes that tasted like more,
headed the dining room and
kitchen . . . Anatole's on
Livernois was owned by Josef
Charron, who parlayed his
French mother's knowledge of
the culinary art, a World War
II tour of duty as an army
cook in the South Pacific and
12 years as a chef at Pont-
chartrain Wine Cellars, plus
a few thousand dollars, into
Anatole's Sous Les Etoiles .. .
Nobody, but nobody, ever call-
ed it anything but Anatole's.
When Grecian Gardens on
Monroe was owned by Costas
Colocasides, the only time it
wasn't open was from 5 a.m.
to 11 a.m. seven days a week
. . . Nerio (rhymed with
Mario) Lelli, who owned the
Italian dining spot on Wood-
ward, was about as round as
a ping pong ball and liked to
refer to himself in the third
person as "the doctor" . . . Ar-
minio Beltramello, who later
opened his Arminio's Villa
Venice on Woodward, was
maitre d' at Maria's on Puri-
tan and did flaming dishes
with his eyes closed.
Mario's was and still is a-
mong the city's top restau-
rants . . . Pontchartrain Wine
Cellars on Lamed was consid-
ered Detroit's best-known
French restaurant and run by
Joan (Borgman) Lee when fa-
ther, Harold Borgman, its
founder, took ill . . . He open-
ed the old Pontchartrain on
Wayne in 1935 . . . The new
Pontchartrain opened in 1956
. . . Roma Cafe, Riopelle and
Erskine, was owned by Hector
and Morris Sossi since 1934
but they never were sure
when their restaurant first
opened its doors . . . Frank
Raiti opened Paradiso Cafe in
1933 and by 1940 had ac-
quired two partners who did
the cooking, Pete Fraccia and
Sam Cracciolo . . . Over 20
years later, it was taken over
by Marcella and Dan Moody,
who used to own Moody's
Beef Buffet on W. Seven Mile
Road . . . Vanelli's on Wood-

ward was owned by three
brothers: Sam, Joe and Al
Vanelli, who would go to the
old country and each time
bring back new recipes to try
. . . Nobody talked when
Albert Kastner, owner of
Albert's Dining room on W
Seven Mile, was around . . . he
did it all . . . Wife Betty was
his cook . . . Baja's on Michi-
gan in Dearborn was owned
by "Dearborn's unbossed
councilman" John Baja,
leader of the opposition to
Mayor Orville Hubbard.
Fox and Hounds, owned to-
day by Kevin Downey, was
built in 1927 and is an exact
replica of its namesake in
England . . . Hedge's Wigwam
on Woodward had a simulated
giant wigwam on its roof and
the entrance guarded by
stern-looking wooden Indians
. . . Lofy's Arbor Lill in
Plymouth, owned by Norbert
Lofy and wife Margaret, was
a converted apple factory .. .
Some of the best entertain-
ment in the nation was right
here in Windsor at Al Siegel's
Elmwood Casino and Mike
Drakich's Top Hat which still
keeps going.
Of them all, probably the
busiest was a little counter
eatery that had a seating
capacity of 24 . . . Lafayette
Coney Island, where it made
no difference the hour, late or
early . . . People from all
walks of life rubbed elbows at
Bill Keros' little operation
that used to serve as many as
1,000 people a day . . . Bill's
brother Gus owned American
Coney Island on one side and
Bill and Gus were partners in
State Coney Island on the
other side.
PLANS FOR TWO affairs
at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek are on the mind of Bob-
bie Borman . . . In October
will be bar mitzvah of her
and Leonard's son Alan .. .
but in the meantime she's
helping friend Eileen Wit-
tenberg and chairgal Linda
Zalla in promoting the up-
coming film, Europa, Europa,
7 p.m. April 9 at Shaarey
Zedek.
