When Grecian Gardens on Monroe was owned by Costas Colocasides, the only time it wasn't open was from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. seven days a week . . . Nerio (rhymed with Mario) Lelli, who owned the Italian dining spot on Wood- ward, was about as round as a ping pong ball and liked to refer to himself in the third person as "the doctor" . . . He open- ed the old Pontchartrain on Wayne in 1935 . . . The new Pontchartrain opened in 1956 . . . Roma Cafe, Riopelle and Erskine, was owned by Hector and Morris Sossi since 1934 but they never were sure when their restaurant first opened its doors . . . Frank Raiti opened Paradiso Cafe in 1933 and by 1940 had ac- quired two partners who did the cooking, Pete Fraccia and Sam Cracciolo . . . Over 20 years later, it was taken over by Marcella and Dan Moody, who used to own Moody's Beef Buffet on W. Seven Mile Road . . . Vanelli's on Wood- ward was owned by three brothers: Sam, Joe and Al Vanelli, who would go to the old country and each time bring back new recipes to try . . . Baja's on Michi- gan in Dearborn was owned by "Dearborn's unbossed councilman" John Baja, leader of the opposition to Mayor Orville Hubbard. Fox and Hounds, owned to- day by Kevin Downey, was built in 1927 and is an exact replica of its namesake in England . . . Hedge's Wigwam on Woodward had a simulated giant wigwam on its roof and the entrance guarded by stern-looking wooden Indians . . . Lofy's Arbor Lill in Plymouth, owned by Norbert Lofy and wife Margaret, was a converted apple factory .. . Some of the best entertain- ment in the nation was right here in Windsor at Al Siegel's Elmwood Casino and Mike Drakich's Top Hat which still keeps going. Of them all, probably the busiest was a little counter eatery that had a seating capacity of 24 . . . Lafayette Coney Island, where it made no difference the hour, late or early . . . People from all walks of life rubbed elbows at Bill Keros' little operation that used to serve as many as 1,000 people a day . . . Bill's brother Gus owned American Coney Island on one side and Bill and Gus were partners in State Coney Island on the other side. In October will be bar mitzvah of her and Leonard's son Alan .. . but in the meantime she's helping friend Eileen Wit- tenberg and chairgal Linda Zalla in promoting the up- coming film, Europa, Europa, 7 p.m. April 9 at Shaarey Zedek.
