A New Ballroom Dance Floor
Has An Italian Place Jumping

ike a tiny spark lying
innocently in the
woods, it took awhile to
catch on, but once taking hold
the little flicker became a fire
that few people want to put
out.
This is what has happened
with ballroom dancing, Fri-
day and Saturday evenings at
Mario's on Second Boulevard.
A beautiful, intimate fire-
placed room that had
previously been used as a par-
ty room was transformed in-
to the dining and dancing
segment of this highly
popular Italian restaurant.
The Billy Prince Quartet
plays in front of a good-sized
wooden dance floor as couples
terpsi to songs they've loved
for many years . . . "Deep
Purple,' "Back lb Sorrento,'
"Chicago," "New York, New
York," "San Francisco," Night
Train," "Mack The Knife,"
"I've Got You Under My
Skin," "The Nearness of You,"
"I Wanna Be Around to Pick
Up The Pieces" . . . and a lot
of others.
Sitting and listening, Ken
Singer says, "They're playing
our songs!" . . . while wife
Sharon heartily nods and con-
tinues eating those black
olives she loves so much (pity
any poor waiter who tries to
take them away!) . . . George
Zeff getting up to sing with
the band and doing "Hava
Nagila" and songs in French.
There are familiar faces all
over Mario's on this festive
Saturday evenings as owner
Frank Passalacqua, son Vince
and Frank's wife Claudie
seem to have given their
customers something more to
go with the acclaimed cuisine
and service . . . They don't
come much better than even-
ing Maitre d'/Manager Mark
Pautuk, for example, whose
gracious attentiveness,
politeness and all-out will-
ingness to please are
standouts.
Ballroom dancing at
Mario's on Second is to music
with which most people can
relate . . . with Billy Prince
singing at the piano as his
quartet makes for an enter-
taining evening.
This is not just a room and
a dance floor . . . It's a pretty
room . . . fully-mirrored walls
to take away that
claustrophobic feeling . . .
with much warmth for
pleasureable dining.
If there was one thing lack-

thday . . . The former localites
now live in Lauderhill, Fla.
RECENT ITEM in the
Detroit Free Press, "The
Sultan of Brunei paid $12
million cash for an estate
next to his pink and posh
Beverly Hills Hotel. What the
sultan — known to friends as
H.H., for 'his highness' — got
for his money were two acres
and an 8,000-square-foot,
three-bedroom house. It com-
pletes a package of property
the sultan has been buying
around the hotel."
More to the little article is
that it was owned by former
Detroiter Muriel Silberstein
Slatkin . . . Her father, Ben
Silberstein, went to Los
Angeles years back, bought
the Beverly Hills Hotel,

ing at Mario's on Second all
these years, it must have been
ballroom dining . . . Now
Frank has it all.

CONGRATS ... to Betty
and Nathan Barnett . . . on
their 50th anniversary .. .
celebrated with friends and
relatives while vacationing in
Florida.

SHE GOES ONLY by her
first name . . . but that's
enough when you have the
talent of Shoshana, appear-
ing at Bouzouki Lounge in
Greektown.
After all, if people like
Cher, Madonna and others
can do it, why not Shoshana
who sings in 12 languages
and possesses probably the
most vital ingredient
necessary in stand-up show
business entertainment .. .
knowing the audience.
This very important asset is
many times the difference
that separates good and
mediocre . . . Having an ex-
cellent voice like Shoshana
with her wide contralto range
that hovers between soprano
and alto is a much-desired
quality . . . But few things are
more important than know-
ing the audience, and this
Shoshana does extremely
well.
So much so that she has
been asked to continue well
beyond her original contrac-
tual agreement with
Bouzouki Lounge.
Shoshana has a way of
pleasing her entire audience
by singing for them the way
they would like her to.

Born in Jaffa, Israel,
Shoshana moved to New York
when 17 . . . and at 18 did her
first bar mitzvah, followed by
more plus weddings and off-
Broadway acting . . . Her first
nightclub job was at the
former Elavran in Greenwich
Village . . . and she has since
sung all over the world.
Shoshana enjoys different
cultures . . . loves to entertain
people . . . make them happy
with her slow and fast
numbers . . . standards and
blues (which she likes most to
do) and ethnic songs.
Recognizing various
segments of her audience and
satisfying their wants have
made Shoshana an interna-
tional favorite . . . For certain
this gift is a major reason for
her successful Bouzouki
Lounge appearance.
CONGRATS . . . to Esther
and Nathan Wolok . . . on
their 64th anniversary . . .
and to Nate on his 85th bir-

becoming nationally or inter-
nationally famous for that
reason . . . and had two
daughters, Seema and
Muriel.
The youngest, Seema, mar-
ried Ivan Boesky, and Muriel
wed Bert Slatkin, whose
father had a little jewelry
store in Pontiac . . . The latter
couple went out to Los
Angeles and Bert helped
manage the hotel for his
father-in-law . . . They had
two children and are not
together anymore.
Muriel got one-half of the
millions when the hotel was
sold . . . Ben also gave her the
two acres (part of the deal) as
a gift . . . This is where she
built the "three-bedroom"
house and now gets another
$12.5 million on its sale.
CONGRATS . to Anne
Milgrom . . . on her 75th bir-
thday . . . celebrated here in
Oak Park this Monday .. .
and in California from where
she recently returned after
seeing her four sons, three
daughters-in-law and three
grandchildren.
THE YEAR OF the
monkey has begun for the
Chinese people . . . as their
New Year celebration went on
for eight days . . . The tradi-
tional lion-dragon dance was
in usual good form at many
area festive occasions.
In Farmington Hills, at
Hunan Palace on 10 Mile,
owners Linda Parker and
Chef Jack Dai had their gaie-
ty doings on Chinese New
Year's Eve as Senator Jack
Faxon greeted about 150 in
Chinese, which drew much
