being like one big family."
Woodbine's centennial
celebration, which was titled
"100 Years of Brotherhood
and Unity," emphasized that
theme and also Woodbine's
place in agricultural history.
"Woodbine was a spawning
place for agricultural com-
munities in the state of New
Jersey and throughout the
United States," says Mr.
Singer, who serves almost as
an unofficial Jewish historian
for Woodbine and even has
hopes of helping to start a
historic museum or at least
archives.
He tries to keep in touch
with Woodbiners who once
lived here and are now spread
all over. "Woodbiners are
everywhere — in Tucson,
Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Tel
Aviv — and there's an
especially large concentration
in Florida," says Mr. Singer.
"In fact, Florida is almost
considered Woodbine South."
As for the original Wood-
bine, N.J., it's not a Jewish
farming community anymore.
Like other intensely Jewish
environments — for example,
the Lower East Side in New
York — Woodbine's population
has changed and is now
predominantly black and
Hispanic.
The change came gradual-
ly, as the rural life in general
declined and people moved to
larger cities. "That's what
happened to rural small-town
America," says Mr. Singer,
who, along with his wife and
two children, is among the 40
Jewish residents in a popula-
tion of 3000.
But Woodbine was in its
heyday from 1820 to 1920.
"There was work and an
agricultural school, and it's
been estimated that over
40,000 Jews spent at least two
years in Woodbine," says Mr.
Singer.
Over 100 years old now, its
place in Jewish history is
secure. This is the town where
many Jewish immigrants
from Eastern Europe got
their start and where their
synagogue is a national
historic landmark.
"Woodbine is a great place
to show the history of the
American Jewish farming
community," says Mr. Singer.
"Of all those communities,
this was the most active." ❑
Of the 31 countries taking
part in the Evian interna-
tional conference on refu-
gees, convened July 6, 1938,
in the face of the plight of
Austrian and German Jews,
only one — the Dominican
Republic — was willing to
accept a significant number
of refugees.
