PASSOVER IN PASSOVER
PARADISE
PERFECTED

Spend this Passover in Paradise at the spectacular
Kauai Hilton... surrounded by lush greenery and
located on one of Kauai's loveliest white-sand

"The synagogue was built
by the members, without any
subcontracting at all," says
Mr. Singer. The bricks and
other materials used to con-
struct it came right from the
area, including wood from the
nearby pinelands.
Inside, the sanctuary is
Sephardic in style, with a
balcony, a wooden bimah, and
very high, 25-foot windows.
"And the acoustics are ex-
cellent," says Mr. Singer, who
was bar mitzvah here in
1960. "There was something
so heartfelt every time we'd
sing. It was as if something
shook us."
He also recalls Sunday
brunches, laying tefillin with
the men in the minyan and
the sense of bonding that
made his hometown so
distinctive.
"It was a very vibrant com-
munity for work and for play,"
says Mr. Singer, who works
for the Cumberland County
Health Department in
Bridgeton, 27 miles away, and
lives in a spacious house in
his native town one half block
from the synagogue.
He remembers when
Feldman's Hotel was also on
Washington Avenue; Klein's
Candy Store was right across
the street, and Siegel's super-
market was next door.
Even before those busi-
nesses were established, as
early as 1895, the residents of
Woodbine had built a self-
generating electric plant and
a pasteurization plant as
well.
Whether they worked on
the farms or later operated
their own businesses, the
Jews of Woodbine were a
close-knit community and a
diverse one. "They were from
every part of Eastern Europe
— from Poland, Russia,
Ukraine — and some from
Western Europe, too;' says Mr.
Singer. "It was a multi-ethnic
community."
It stayed that way, he says,
as non-Jewish residents also
started to settle in Woodbine,
working on the farms or in
the factories that were later
established. They included
Italians, Poles, Slays,
Hispanics and blacks. All of
them lived in harmony with
the Jews.
"We were always an in-
tegrated town," says Mr.
Singer. "And we practiced the
true elements of brotherhood.
When it came to working
together and playing
together, it was all Wood-
biners together."
They were so bonded, in
fact, that the non-Jews even
learned to speak Yiddish.
"Many gentiles spoke fluent
Yiddish," says Mr. Singer.
"There was a sense of almost
