FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1991

he presence of a good
quarterback is a main
key to the success of
quality football teams . . . His
leadership is important as the
working cog of a well-oiled
machine.
So it is too in the hotel
game, where the general
manager is so vital in
melding the cohesiveness of a
solid team.
The recent naming of Tom
Padgett as g.m. of the
Radisson Plaza Hotel at Town
Center off Northwestern and
Evergreen in Southfield
brought a field general whose
emphasis in the hospitality
world has been concentrated
on teamwork . . . Not with a
"you do it for me" attitude
either . . . his people like that
. . . because Tom knows what
he's talking about as a
16-year veteran of the hotel
industry . . . Nine of them
have been with the Radisson
chain and prior to coming
here Tom was general
manager at the Radisson
Plaza in Lexington, Ky.
But besides holding down
several posts with Radisson,
he has also held sales,
marketing and operations
positions with Marriott and
Omni Hotels.
Being top dog at a four dia-
mond hotel (AAA) such as
Radisson Plaza is a challenge
Tom enjoys . . . It gives him
the opportunity to pursue his
high promotional talents
with further emphasis.
Radisson Plaza has 384
guest rooms and suites and
over 14,000 square feet of
meeting and convention space
for business and social
gatherings, plus one of the
most talked about lobbies in
this area . . . This beautiful
and comfortable sector of the
hotel also fronts Bouquets
Restaurant and Tango's Euro-
pean Bistro with its live
entertainment for dancing.
Tom quarterbacks a pretty
powerful team in people like
Jay Freeman, food and
beverage director, with a
large knowledge of the res-
taurant and catering opera-
tions in which he worked 14
years prior to joining
Radisson . . . Executive Chef
Judy Danielson is a Radisson
Hotels international chef of
the year . . . Pat McKay is
well-known in metro Detroit
circles as an excellent sales
director, previously holding
the post of director of sales
and marketing at the Berk-

shire Hilton in Ann Arbor .. .
In 1987, Pat was honored as
sales director of the year.
When Radisson Plaza open-
ed its doors back then in
1987, there was an air of ex-
citement greeting this highly-
regarded property . . . Tom
Padgett brings still another
dimension for praise.
"WHERE ARE all the
unemployed people we hear
about?" ask the C.A. Muer
Corp. folks . . . Seems that
they've advertised for weeks
with a small amount of ap-
plications to fill 150 open jobs.
Its Pal's Restaurant (former
Bloomfield Charley's) on W.
Maple off Orchard Lake Road
is slated to open latter part of
this month . . . Manager will
be Leo Beil Jr., son of Chuck
Muer's corporate treasurer
. . . Leo Jr. is well-seasoned in
the restaurant business,
managing Wayne Charley's
and Charley's Crab in Clin-
ton, Ohio, before being
brought here to open the new
Muer concept.
CONGRATS . . . to Elissa
(Weingarden) Margulies .. .
on her 30th birthday . . .
Daughter of my nephew and
niece, Dr. Jerry and JoAnn
Weingarden, and same age as
my son Scott, who also recent-
ly celebrated his birthday .. .
Can't believe they're both 30!
of
THE ANGELS
Michigan Cancer Foundation
had a reputation to maintain
at its recent Evening of
Elegance other than being a
principal fund-raising arm of
MCF . . . Each of its five af-
fairs has been better than the
previous ones.
No sweat . . . the 200 black-
tie guests who raised a whop-
ping $300,000 as Dr. Michael
Brennan, retired president of
MCF, was honored, could on-
ly ask how many more im-
provements were possible.
Sitting at an interesting
table with most congenial
people didn't hurt any . . .
How many times have you
gone to an affair and been
seated where it seemed like
everyone sat on their hands
and were afraid to smile for
fear of acting natural?
Albert Scaglione of Park
West Gallery boasts four
names, including Alberto .. .
Wife Miriam joins everyone
else in calling him just plain
Al . . . Shelly and Joel Tauber
holding hands in loving
sweetness . . . People asking
Barbara Beznos (Harold) if
she was any relation to movie
star Stephanie Powers . . .
they look so much alike.
Iry Dworkin and Marian

(Blake) Colburn, Les' frau,
learning that they were
neighbors on Webb off Dexter
. . . Marty Kellman telling Iry
he lived on Auburn and Jef-
ferson and Iry saying, "He
had to travel 50 miles for
bagels." . . . Photographer
telling Marty Blanck, "I
know you! You put windows in
my house." . . . Marty and
Lorraine are a prize
togetherness couple . . .
Sidney Forbes handsome and
warm as ever . . . a truly nice
guy . . . Betty and Nat Korash
married 46 years and looking
back to when people would
say it wouldn't last beyond
the first year . . . Florine
Mark-Ross and hubby Bill
Ross swinging a mean hip on
the dance floor . . . Dave

Tom Padgett
brought the
teamwork
emphasis to the
Radisson.

Hermelin singing (honest!) a
Sweetest Day song to lovely
Helen Zuckerman, who
couldn't be sweeter.
Big gala by Michigan
Cancer Foundation, May 19,
will also be at the Ritz
Carlton . . . and another MCF
event where people ask, "How
can it get any better?"

GET WELL WISHES .. .

to Joe Silberschein . . . at Pro-
vidence Hospital.
PEOPLE WHO remember
many of those prices of a long
time ago say they'll never
come back . . . And they're
y
probably right . . . But only
for a week that ends tomor-
row night Tunnel Bar-B-Q on
Park Street in Windsor is
celebrating its 50th anniver-
sary . . . and here are some of
the things people have been
getting with dinner . . . Coffee
10 cents, hot chocolate 15
cents, Vernor's float 15 cents,
Swiss chocolate tart, banana
cream pie or coconut cream
pie 15 cents . . . Hot dog is 10
cents with order of French
fries and beverage . . . Must
be fun paying those kind of
prices again.
