FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1991

am Fishman was
always looking for
creative ways to make
money. When she heard a
radio newscast in March
about a 2-year-old child who
knew to call 911 when her
mother was injured, Mrs.
Fishman knew she had a
winner.
"I called my mother up
from the car phone and said,
`Listen, I've got this great
idea. A phone book for chil-
dren with pictures,' " Mrs.
Fishman said.
"The radio newscast had
talked about ways to teach
children to identify with pic-
tures. And I have a
31/2-year-old who does associ-
ate pictures and symbols-
with names — he knows
McDonald's but he can't
read yet. So it was a
natural," Mrs. Fishman
said.
Her phone book, ap-
propriately named My Very
Own Phone Book, has only
been in stores for about a
month. However, each loca-
tion, including It's The Gifts,
Marmel and BookPeople,
has sold out and reordered.
Spiral bound and colorful,
My Very Own Phone Book
contains 15 pages with
spaces to attach photos and
to fill in names and phone
numbers. "My Friend" is at
the top of each page with a
telephone receiver running
down the side. Through a
hole in the cover, the child's
own picture can be seen. And
after an introduction by Mrs.
Fishman, the first page has
911 in large red numbers.
The final copy of My Very
Own Phone Book is
remarkably similar to Mrs.
Fishman's original mock-up
idea. And because it was
such a simple concept,
copyrighting was at the top
of Mrs. Fishman's agenda.
"I was -so scared someone
would steal my idea. But
after getting started I real-
ized no one would want to
take on a project this size,"
Mrs. Fishman said.
Although many hours
were spent with printers,
publishers and an artist,
Mrs. Fishman's admits her
phone book is a labor of love.
"I take it personally if
people don't like the book.
It's like telling me they don't
like my child," Mrs.
Fishman said.
However, that has not
been a problem yet. Every-

Phone Book Created
With Children In Mind

one from grandmothers to a
Southfield 911 dispatcher
has called Mrs. Fishman to
say her idea is great or just
to say thanks for providing a
much needed service.
My Very Own Phone Book
was created under the name
of Just Mom & Me Inc. Mrs.
Fishman's mother, Adelle
Rosen, is a partner in the
project. But the company
name was created with the
idea of a learning tool that
parents and children can
share and do together.
"I think children are
smarter than most people
think. They just need the
tools to communicate," Mrs.
Fishman said. ❑
