FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1991

ou're invited to the
shore for the weekend.
The hostess has it all
- and if they don't, the last
thing they want is another
useless ornament. What's a
guest to do?
Gifts need not be expensive
to be appreciated. Some of my
favorites are suggested in the
20 ideas listed below.
For non-cooks or if time is
short, pick up a few fancy
items at the market but al-
ways buy the best you can af-
ford. Here's a list beginning
with store-bought. Recipes for
some items are included at
the end.
1. A dozen bagels with 2 or
3 spreading cheeses and/or
sliced lox. Buy cheese spreads
or make your own: Low-Fat
Vegetable and Pepper-Garlic.
2. Three varieties of
ground gourmet coffee in-
cluding a decaffeinated. If you
want to splurge, buy coffee
beans instead of ground,
along with an electric coffee
grinder.
3. A dozen fresh-baked
croissants or assorted muf-
fins. Add a jar of preserves
and one of honey.
4. Variety of salad greens,
washed, spin-dried and refri-
gerated. Store in plastic bags
lined with paper towels to ab-
sorb moisture. Use within 48
hours.
5. A half dozen ripe garden
tomatoes and a bunch of fresh
basil for a freshly prepared
salad.
6. Basket of supper mak-
ings: flavored pasta, jar of
spaghetti sauce, loaf of herb
or garlic bread, fresh-grated
Parmesan cheese, head of let-
tuce, garden tomatoes.
7. Fresh fruit such as
plums and peaches, and a bot-
tle of dessert wine.
8. Selection of pretty col-
ored paper goods to match the
house color scheme.
9. Homemade salad dress-
ings: New Russian, Honey-
_
Lemon.
10. Homemade sauces:
Asian Basting Sauce for
chicken; Daufuskie Sauce to
serve over cooked fish.
11. Large bowl of Humus
appetizer with package of
whole wheat pita bread.
12. Macaroni and Double
Cheese casserole.
