Park West
Celebrates Altman

"Harold Altman . . . A
Celebration," is a collection of
lithographs and etchings in-
spired by nature slated for
Aug. 17-Sept. 19 at Park West
Gallery. The exhibition will
open with a private reception
Aug. 16 at the gallery; the ar-
tist will be in attendance.
Similar to an architect in
dealing with space, Mr.
Altman creates compositions
that are carefully designed
and controlled, capturing
small human dramas among
nature's foliage or man's life-
style. Mr. Altman's works
teach viewers to see familiar
places — such as famous
parks — from new
perspectives.
Initially devoting his
talents to drawing and pain-
ting, the 67-year-old artist
turned to etching and
lithography in 1958 while at
the University of Wisconsin
on a faculty support grant.
Discovering an etching press
in an unused classroom, Mr.
Altman began his printmak-
ing career with a "how-to"
book.
Mr.
Altman's
first
lithographs were created in
1961 while he was a fellow at
the Tamarind Lithography
Workshop. After working
with the French litho shops,
in 1973, Mr. Altman
discovered Paris' Atelier
Mourlot, a professional studio
that has guided to completion
the graphic art of Picasso,
Miro, Chagall, Braque and
Calder.
Mr. Altman creates each of
his lithographs by hand in the
manner of those past masters.
His entire 1991 collection
as well as numerous other
works ranging from 1980 to
1990 will be offered for sale at
the exhibition.
The gallery is located at
29469 Northwestern High-
way in Southfield. Gallery
hours are Monday-Wednes-
day, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thursday
and Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.;
and Saturday and Sunday, 11
a.m.-6 p.m.
