hatever might

happen, there is
always time to eat.
This is the premise of
Shelley Berman's First Is
Supper, the story of an im-
migrant family adjusting to
life on Chicago's west side in
1919 and the mother who
guides it with strength and
sensibility through crisis.
Ms. Berman's play is the
second in a series of four
plays presented by the Jew-
ish Ensemble Theatre at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center's DeRoy
Theatre for the 1991-92 sea-
son.
First Is Supper opens Dec.
4 and will run the entire
month. Evelyn Orbach,
JET's artistic director, will
direct the play.
Mrs. Orbach selected the
Berman piece and its runn-
ing time to coincide with the
holiday season and its
typically family productions.
She said she also chose the
work because it fulfills the
goals of JET.
"The criteria of our mis-
sion is that the work either
be written by a Jewish
playwright, that it has Jew- <
ish themes or that it is of in-
terest to the Jewish com-
munity," Mrs. Orbach said.
"Our goals are intentionally
broad so we may consider
many plays."
Although most JET pro-
ductions are of popular
plays, Ms. Orbach stressed
JET is a Jewish theater in
addition to a professional
one.
Last season, Ms. Orbach
refused The Merchant of /
Venice because she said it -
was inherently anti-Semitic.
Instead, JET presented The
Merchant, a takeoff from the
original script.
"The difference here is
Shylock becomes a human
being we might recognize
rather than a despicable
problem," Ms. Orbach said.
JET originated three years
ago after a Jewish Commun-
ity Council and Jewish Fed-
eration sponsored-study
revealed Detroit's Jewish
community wanted cultural
enhancement. Ms. Orbach
took a tip from companies in
New York, Boston, Chicago
and Toronto and decided to
tap into Jewish theater in

Detroit.

"We're serving Jewish
cultural life in a unique
way," Ms. Orbach said.
