The Families Have Changed,
But The Reputation Carries On
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
A
long time past, 1932,
but many folks still
remember Buddy's
Bar-B-Q from the days of 12th
and Clairmount . . . Years
later after closing, it reopen-
ed as part of the Trio on Nor-
thwestern, owned by Buddy
and Mary Meyerson's sons
Arlyn, Jerry and Aubrey, who
also had the Scotch 'n Sirloin
on Northwestern and Eight
Mile.
After both places closed,
Arlyn went out on his own .. .
for 10 years keeping the fami-
ly name alive with Buddy's
Bar-B-Q at the north side of
West Bloomfield Plaza on Or-
chard Lake Road.
Arlyn sold the place July 2,
1990, but the name stayed on
. . . along with its noted
recipes and sauces in retain-
ing the same taste qualities
developed by Buddy and.
Mary.
Recent one-year birthday of
their Buddy's Bar-B-Q in
West Bloomfield was by
Frank and Joanne Clark and
Judy and Dan Cristiano .. .
It's still a popular carry-out,
plus tables and chairs with
seating for 23 . . . Other
touches have done much to
brighten the cute little spot
. . . like the five colorful bon-
nets made by Joanne (who
also cooks during the day) on
its walls . . . Frank and
Joanne's son, Fran; is a
graduate from the Culinary
Institute of America in Hyde
Park, N.Y., and is its evening
chef . . . However, his special-
ty is Buddy's Bar-B-Q's other
operation, Party Perfect
Catering, which is totally dif-
ferent from their Buddy's
setup, with Fran capable of
preparing whatever folks
want.
When a restaurant or
carry-out with a notable
reputation is sold, it's
comforting to know that the
name is well-kept . . .
something the Clarks and
Cristianos have done with
pride in the knowledge of
Buddy's Bar-B-Q's good
name.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Nita Silberschein . . .
recuperating after heart
surgery at Beaumont
Hospital.
WASHINGTON, D.C. had
its Perle Mesta and the local
region has its Marge Robbins
. . . It was almost a month
ago, but her parties live on for
a long time . . . This one was
a July 4 shindig at the "Rob-
bins Nest" home of Marge
and Jerry . . . with all the
guests wearing red, white and
blue or white and blue garb
. . . One guy said he had on
red undershorts but nobody
asked him to prove it.
Marge and Jerry wore mat-
ching outfits, and valets
handed guests theater tickets
for an 8:30 showtime in the
Robbins' lower level . . . Par-
ty was on their large deck
with Eddie Rosenberg warn-
ing people that the only weak
spot was where they were
standing . . . Even wife
Shirley jumped, although on
to his straight-faced remarks
for years . . . They had to
leave early, but not before
Eddie took a hunk of halvah.
Plenty of music by Bill
Meyer and songstress Marla
Jackson . . . No party without
the Robbins-Cooper family
closeness . . . they're always
there . . . This year, though,
Judge Steve and Caroline
Cooper couldn't make it .. .
they had their own . . . Then
again, they did . . . the next
night when Marge and Jerry
had a second July 4 party for
those who weren't there the
evening previous, for mostly
former neighbors of 31 years
in Oak Park.
Seventy-five the first night
and 50 the second . . . a two-
nighter affair instead of the
usual one of yesteryears that
used to be held in their back-
yard when Marge and Jerry
lived in Oak Park.
Torchy and Mort Silverman,
Madeline and Jerry Harris,
Phyllis and David Barr and of
course, mom Mollie Cooper
. . . Aunt Rose Lieberman,
Nancy and Marshall Mandell,
Sandy and Michael Robbins
and Donna and Rock Evans
. . . This year, instead of Lee
Etelman, Jerry Harris and
David Barr taking turns on
the bar-b-q grill, each wear-
ing his own red, white and
blue apron . . . and naturally
Lou Popper brought the chile
h' has made the past five
years for Marge's parties.
Showtime was a winning
experience as Jim Shannon
did an excellent turn with a
magical show of much
enjoyment.
Second night was like a reu-
nion for past Oak Park and
Southfield leaders . . . Former
O.P. Mayor and State Senator
Joe and_ Rena Forbes, former
Senator Danny and Nancy
Cooper and Judge Steven and
Caroline Cooper.
Even birthdays and an-
niversary with individual
cakes for . . . Torchy Silver-
man, Rock Evans, Madeline
Harris and Claire Schwartz
on their birthdays . . . and
Debbie and Neil Dorfman on
their anniversary.
Clever top hat and balloons
centerpieces . . . and plenty of
M & M's . . . red, white and
blue, of course.
JEWELRY DEPT. . . .
Kathy Hack and David
Perlman are engaged for an
"I Do" session in December.
LOCALITES Stan and
Kaye Miller were recently
taken by surprise . . . both
literally and figuratively .. .
in celebration of their 25th
anniversary.
Was a fun weekend for Bob
and Leslie Golding, Fred and
Sandy Samson and Susie
Gantz, all putting on the sur-
prise for Stan and Kaye who
were told only one thing .. .
Buddy's Bar-B-Q
has been a Detroit
institution for 60
years.
what to pack . . . Fred took
sick at the last minute so they
had to have a ball without
him.
Quite a surprise weekend,
with the seven attending a
dude ranch near Muskegon,
which turned out be a love
of Stan's . . . The others didn't
know it, but he is a skilled
horseman who greatly enjoys
riding . . . Nice to have
friends like this.
ANOTHER FORMER
localite is climbing the ladder
in Hollywood . . . Carolyn
Rands, in town from Los
Angeles for the recent wed-
ding of Howard Jacobson and
Lilly Glancy, attended the
Israel Tennis Centers bash at
home of Dave and Doreen
Hermelin with aunt and un-
cle Gloria and Dave Leader.
Carolyn recently completed
the made-for-Turner Televi-
sion Network film, The
Habitation of Dragons in
which she assisted with the
camera work . . . It stars
Frederic Forest, Maureen
O'Sullivan and Brad Davis,
and is due for viewing this
fall.
Also at the same event,
Sandy Rubin's hubby, Marv,
said he and partners Leo
Sklar, Manny Ravet and
Harvey Wolf of hereabouts
and Iry Obstgarten of
Cleveland are set to begin
construction this month on
