"It's not the most important
thing in life . . . My family
comes first.
- "But handball helped me to
stay alive. And my wife
understands that. She goes
along with it wholeheartedly.
We never have any problems
about my handball playing.
"Other wifes might con-
sider that the husband is
away from the home too
much. But she understands
that I have to do it. It's a way

The Rotts, who have been
married for 17 years, have
four children — three from
Rott's first marriage and one
from Fern's first marriage.
They have four grand-
children.
The Rotts are also business
partners as co-owners of
David's Office Supply and
Furniture Company in Birm-
ingham. They opened the
business in the tumultuous
year following their marriage.
That first year also marked
the discovery of Rott's first
cancer, which resulted in his
losing a kidney.
So, after three bouts with
cancer, the knee injuries and
assorted aches and pains, how
does Rott feel today?
"I feel great," he responds.
"How should I feel? What
should be bad? It's good in
America. I feel fine; I have no
problems."
Rott then notes that, after
returning the previous day
from a trip to Disney World
with two of his grandchildren,
"My calves are killing me
because I'm not used to that
constant walking . . . They're
sore, the calves, but so what?
I was on a Stairmaster today
for 15 minutes and I rode a
bicycle for six or seven
minutes, plus some Nautilus,
plus some weightlifting.
"So what, they're sore. You
overcome it. It'll get better.
