David Rott takes a
breather after a match.

big in New York in those
days." -
Today, Rott will admit that
he has lost some physical
skills over the years. He
counteracts the effects of ag-
ing with an exercise program
and tries to play a smarter
game of handball.
"I anticipate where the op-
ponent is going to be when
I'm shooting the shot. And
_ where he is going to be, (the
ball) is not going to be..there.
I have developed a good -left
hand, what we call a shot that
) tends to die in the left-corner.
That gives a lot of trouble to
a lot of people.
"I have a. good back-wall
shot," he says. "I've developed-
a good serve lately. I'd never
had a bad serve but nothing
as effective as it is now --
never.
"You don't want to set me
up and you don't want to
make the back-wall shot easy
for my right hand or give me
an easy setup in the middle
some place because you're in
trouble in most cases."
Rott plays three times a
week at Maple Athletic Club
in Troy, usually against
young players trying to beat
the champ.
Cooper says that, off the
court, Rott is "a terrific, ter-
rific nice guy. He is well-liked

by everybody who plays with
him." However, "he is a dif-
ferent person on the court: He
is a tough, efficient com-
petitor."
But Rott says that playing
fair is "much more impor-
tant" to him than winning.
However, when an opponent
does not play fair, the game
changes. "All my tiredness,
my anxieties, losing my
sharpness, tend to leave and
I go back to work."
Playing in a national - tour-
nament, Rott easily won the.
first game of a best-of-three
match: He was losing the se-
cond game, 16.12, when his •
opponent left Rott an easy
opening. As Rott took advan-
tage and won the point, the
opponent ran =into -Rott, hop-
ing. to have a foul.called.
When the referee refused to
call the foul,-Rott says, his op-
ponent said, " 'It won't mat-
ter anyway?
"When he said that," Rott
recalls, "he got me really
mad. And he never made
another point. I beat him
21-16."
Rott's wife of 17 years, Fern,
understands and supports his
handball, even it frequently
sends him across North
America to play in tour-
naments. "Handball has been
a way of life for me," he says.
