The Garden series will
feature the Alma Smith
Quintet 3:30 p.m. May 5 at
the (Compri) Hotel. Playing
with Ms. Smith will be Her-
bie Williams, trumpet and
flugelhorn; Drew Evans on
drums, and Rodney Whit-
taker, bass. High tea will be
at 3 p.m.
Concerts In The Garden
will feature Ginka Gerova-
Ortega, flutist and Italian
guitarist, Michele Ramo 3:30
p.m. May 12 at the (Compri)
Hotel.
The program will include
music by Loeillet, Giuliani,
Chopin, Robert Beaser's
Mountain Songs, Five Catalo-
nian Songs, music of Pablo De
Sarasate and an unusual ar-
rangement of "Spain."
High tea in the English tra-
dition will be served at 3 p.m.
followed by the concert.

Art Of The Thirties
Programs Set
Southfield Cultural Arts
will present four evenings
devoted to the arts of the thir-
ties. This series will explore
the artist's reaction to one of
the most turbulent and
depressing eras in American
history.
Dr. Paul Silverman and
Amy Lowell will perform
theatre readings. Matt
Michaels, director of Jazz
Studies Program at Wayne
State University, will inter-
pret the area's music. Dr.
Silverman and Walter Both-
well will present readings
and discuss literary works of
the time. Gloria Kahn will
present and discuss many of
the artists who survived the
Depression, later to become
the geniuses of 20th Century
American art, with the help
of the Roosevelt Administra-
tion's Federal Works Project.
The four sessions will be
held 7:30 p.m. Thursdays,
May 9, 16, 23 and 30 at the
Burgh Site Church, 26080
Berg Road (at Civic Center
Drive). There is a fee for the
