Plans call for 14,400 usable
square feet with a common
seating area to accommodate
300 people.
TRUE TO FORM, another
Leah Marks production open-
ed with dancing . . . Only this
time it was with an ethnic
theme as Greek dancers came
out and wowed the over 500
attendees.
Spring Fashion Celebration
'91 at Troy Marriott was by
Greek Orthodox Diocese of
Detroit and Ladies Philop-
tochos Council with the usual
musical fashion extravaganza
Leah has become noted for.
Showing their wares in fine
fashion were . . . Forgotten
Woman, Cocktails, Lena of
Troy, Broadway Mens Wear,
Ceci's Jewelry and Don
Thomas Sporthaus . . . with
hair styling by Bellissima
Two and makeup by Malibu
. . . Rich Fisher, WJBK-TV
anchor, was guest commen-
tator until having to leave for
his stint at the station.
LES GREENBLATT, ex-
localite now teaching stu-
dents of ages 4-65 in Prince
George's County, Md., was
winner of the TESOL (Teach-
ers of English to Speakers of
Other Languages) Newburg
House Award for Excellence
in Teaching . . . The $1,000
prize was given to Les at
TESOL's annual convention
recently in New York.
The former Mumford High
and Wayne State University
grad taught at Friend's
School in Detroit before mov-
ing to the Washington, D.C.,
area to receive his M.A.
degree from Trinity College
in Washington . . . Les has
worked with students from
other countries for almost 20
years.
SARA KOOPERMAN, a
pioneer in low-impact aero-
bics, will be presented at a
special dedication honoring
Danny Thomas and his work
for St. Jude Children's Re-
search Hopital . . . A mara-
thon aerobic session at One
On One, Farmington Road, is
this Sunday, noon-5 p.m. . . .
followed by a barbeque .. .
The public is invited to watch
or participate.
FOUR CHEFS from
Golden Mushroom, 10 Mile
and Southfield, three appren-
tices and one professional
chef, carried home four gold
medals and four special
awards from the recent 18th
annual Michigan Hospitality
Industry Culinary Arts Salon
in Dearborn's Grand Manor
at Fairlane . . . Over 200 com-
peted for gold, silver and
bronze medals . . . with
special awards also presented
for Best of Show, Best Pastry
and the Judge's Special
Award.
A HIGHLIGHT of my trip
to Atlanta for grandson Mat-
thew's fourth birthday was
the first visit to Buckhead
Diner on Piedmont Road .. .
Reason why it's fantasy in-
terior looked so familiar was
that Buckhead Diner's
creater, Pat Kuleto, also
designed the beautiful Fog Ci-
ty Diner in San Francisco.
All Buckhead Diner rooms
are shaped like luxurious din-
ing cars, with curved ceilings
and plump, wide banquettes
. . . Sconces shaped like tail-
lights and ceiling fixtures
that resemble art deco
brooches cast a sensual glow
reflected by panels of ribbed,
frosted glass between the din-
ing booths.
The neon stripes around the
facade are custom-colored and
the light fixtures hand-blown
originals ...The menu is
huge and offers. a wide varie-
ty of home cooking . . . It's an
interesting menu with a lot of
good things to eat . . . The rice
pudding, however, is anything
but that . . . as tasted by "ex-
perts" Scott and Bonnie
Raskin, Mike and Cindy
Sanders and myself . . . The
other desserts were yummy.
No reservations are taken
at Buckhead Diner . . . and
the wait is usually from 45
minutes to two hours every
night . . . The only place I
didn't mind waiting was Joe
Muer's years back . . . But I
won't mind waiting again at
Buckhead Diner on my next
trip.
I counted six Peachtree
names in Atlanta . . . and
know there must be more .. .
Peachtree Street, Peachtree
Boulevard, Peachtree Lane,
Peachtree Court, Peachtree
Road, Peachtree Corners,
Peachtree Plaza.
Still a big mystery is why
Atlanta doesn't have a full-
fledged Jewish delicatessen
. . . The Jewish population is
large, vigorous and discri-
minating enough to support a
half-dozen good delis.
Goldberg and Son Bakery
on Roswell Road has serving
utensils of plastic with
styrofoam plates and very
limited seating . . . Hebrew
characters printed on a card
at the counter say, "Shalom
Y'All" . . . One of the whim-
sical signs at the counter tells
customers, "Protect your
bagels! Put lox on them!"
BIRTHDAY CONGRATS
. . . to Ed Kasmer on his 70th
. . . to Dharlene Norris . . . to
Muriel "Mal" Silver.
DON'T YOU HATE It
Dept. . . . When drivers in
front of you suddenly put on
their signals when starting to
turn.
