Recalling Old Nicknames
Brings In A New List
DANNY RASKIN
B
Local Columnist
Lind Max Spiegelman
was a phenomenon .. .
He owned the Alamo
Lounge nitery on Livernois
years back with partner
"Stewie" Siegel . . . Max not
only worked the bar, serving
mixed drinks and pouring the
right shots, but also rang the
cash register, which in those
days made a lot of constant
music at the Alamo . . .
"Stewie" went on to own
Hello Dolly on second
Boulevard before becoming a
pit boss at the former M.G.M.
Grand Hotel and Casino in
Las Vegas.
Nicknames continue to crop
up . . . Max "Short Mother"
Friedman, Bill "Hitch"
Laikin, Ed "Shadow" Coblin,
Milt "Stringbean" Garlofsky,
Frank "Pollock" Selman, Ir-
ving "Stash" Rubin, Sam
"Santa Claus" Drapkin (also
known as entertainer Danny
Marvin), Raymond "Fattie"
Bernstein.

Benny "Bulldog" Steinberg,
George "Two Gun" Feller,
Hymie "Pushface" Cooper,
Sam "Farmer" Cooper, Max
"Blackie" Rubin, Sam
"Monkey" Gold, Isadore
"Chinky" Ash, Max "Pun-
chy" Newman, Max "The
Iceman" Lippitt, Louie
"Leape" Levine, Abe "Smart
Money" Levine.
Sam "Pushke" Axelrod was
one tough dude . . . but a
sucker when it came to chari-
ty . . . He gave to everything,
legit or not, and never passed
up a canister . . . They say
that Sam once bought enough
Girl Scout cookies to feed the
entire neighborhood . . . and
you ate them or else.
Joe Frankfort ends these
remembrances . . . Bob "Pan-
co" Kahla, Harold "Hippy"
Freedman, Sol "Buck" Stein,
Irving "Bucko" Stein, Leon
"Lefty" Feldman, Dave
"Twilight" Rubin, Iry "Spy"
Schneider, Moe "Maggie"

man, Dave "The Mayor"

night at the Westin . . . with

performing his hits.

taurant, slated to open at the
former Victoria Station site
on Northwestern, will have
6,365 usable square feet and
a seating capacity for 214 .. .
Also proposed with the sit-
down restaurant and bar/
lounge will be seasonal out-
side dining.
The Southwest dining con-
cept by owners Mike Hitch
and Jimmy Schmidt will be
within the confines of a
beautiful early Spanish
building to be built on the site
where dining cars used to
greet so many people.
Century Lodge B'nai B'rith,
for a third term.
BY THE WAY, that pizza of
ours being sold at the Novi
Hilton on Haggerty and
Eight Mile won't be restricted
from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in
Whispers Lounge . . . just the
price of $2 . . . After 8:30 p.m.
the eight-incher will be $4.95
. . . In both cases, just men-
tion The Jewish News and a
good portion of the proceeds
will be given to Variety, The

PEOPLE HOLD on to
their belongings at the an-
nual rummage sale by Tem-
ple Beth El sisterhood . . .
Seems like everything is for
sale . . . This year it'll be May
16-17, with doors opening at
9 a.m. May 16, through 7
p.m., and then 9 a.m.-noon on
Friday . . . Proceeds from the

law section . . . He recently
returned from the Florida
Keys, where Harvey moder-
ated a seminar attended by
divorce attorneys of the
Michigan and Florida bar
associations . . . He formerly
chaired the Oakland County
Bar Association family law
committee.
Sam "Pushke"
Axelrod was tough,
but a sucker for
charities.
COUNT WAS ALMOST
1,200 for recent fourth annual
International Folk Dance
Festival at Southfield Civic
Pavilion . . . with most of the
crowd staying to the end .. .
The dancers on stage, repre-
senting many nations were
very entertaining and gave
notice that next year's event
could bring an even higher
attendance.
Varied ethnic foods were
popular . . . with lineups for
Gateway Deli (Jewish), Natraj
(Indian), Bangkok (Thailand)
and Savino (Italian) sherbet
. . . All prepared for 1,000 and
ran out . . . an indication of
what to do in 1992.
Southfield Community Re-
lations Director Nimrod
Rosenthal must have been
mighty pleased to see the
Natraj folks go back to their
Greenfield restaurant, pre-
pare more food, and return.

ed by Nat Fridson (close) and
his Fredson cousins.
FINDING the right career
sometimes takes many roads,
but eventually getting on the
right one could reap big
dividends in success and hap-
piness . . . Mary Fisher,
daughter of Max and Marge
Fisher, graduated college
here and worked locally as a
television producer . . . then
as an "advance person" to
President Gerald Ford.
She finally found her niche
as an artist, which is now
Mary's full-time career .. .
Her contemporary styles of
handmade paper and mono-
type print will be exhibited
through May at the Linda
Hayman Gallery on North-
western . . . Mary will be
there today and tomorrow,
2-4 p.m.
LOOK FOR Northland to
also have a food court . . . On
tap are seven fast-food opera-
tions to go along with the
other full service sitdown
operations now there . . .
