WSU Symposium
Set On Racism

The Cohn-Haddow Center
for Judaic Studies and the
department of Africana
studies will present a sym-
posium titled "The Origins of
Modern Racism" 2 p.m. April
8 in Room 289 of the Student
Center Building at Wayne
State University.
The event, free and open to
the public, will feature Alan
Gilbert, a professor in the
Graduate School of Interna-
tional Studies at the Univer-
sity of Denver. He will present
"Pseudo-Scientific Racism
and Public Policy: Past and
Present."
Also speaking will be
Sander Gilman, Goidwin
Smith professor of humane
studies at Cornell University,
who will present "Are Jews
White?"
The symposium is co-
sponsored by Wayne State's
B'nai B'rith Hillel
Foundation.

Laker Fund
Offers Scholarship

Applications are now being
accepted from college
students by the Harry and
Sarah Laker Israel Youth
Scholarship Fund for an
academic year's study in
Israel.
This is the 15th year in
which a $2,500 cash award
will be given to the winning
student, who can select from
the following universities for
his or her study: Bar-Ilan,
Haifa, Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion
or Hebrew University.
To qualify, the applicant
must be a resident of the
Metropolitan Detroit area,
currently attending a college
or university in the United
States and must have applied
to a school of higher learning
in Israel.
Applicants for the scholar-
ship, which is co-sponsored by
the Harry and Sarah Laker
Israel Youth Scholarship
Fund and Congregation Beth
Achim, are now available by
calling 352-8670 or writing to
the Laker Scholarship Fund,
21100 W. 12 Mile Road,
Southfield, Mi 48076. The
final date to apply is May 13.
